Audi 100/A6 door card removal

Help?? Anyone out there had any experience of removing the driver's inner door panel on the A6 estate (1994-badged as Audi 100)? My local friendly mechanic is having trouble getting at interior door release mechanism which has bust.

Yes - there's a hidden screw behind the the door handle that isn't mentioned in the manual.
