Help : S4 problems
Discussion
Hi, Looking for some help & advice.
I have a 2.7L S4 Avant. It has started to develop a 'Whump' from the drivetrain as you come on and off the power, or when you change gear. Sounds like there is slack being taken up when it comes under load.
Took it to the local dealer, they test drove it with me and accepted there was something amiss. So , I booked it in to the workshop.
I have just heard from them...the typical 'They all do that, Sir'. Call me cynical but they seem to have changed their tune once they discovered it was under extended warranty.
Anyone else had similar problems, or can recommend where I can get it independantly tested (in Hants area )?
Cheers.

Propshaft bearings? (This is a guess, as I've not seen a Quattro drivetrain, but.........2p regardless! )
I had to change them on my GTO as they'd worn and whenever you engaged a gear from standstill you'd feel a clunk. If yours are in a bad way, then maybe even the forces of re-engaging drive when moving could cause too much lateral movement?
If the Audi system uses a bearing inside a rubber mount as per the Mitsi, try moving the propshaft side-to-side if you have the means to lift the car up. I could move my prop by hand easily, which isn't the best.

I would ask the dealer to look at the diff. The diff seals are common repair, very cheap to do however often overlooked. If the diff oil had leaked out in the past as a result of the seal failure, repaired and refilled with oil, the wear may be attributed to this.
Dependant on the miles the propshafts usually dont give any trouble.
Gearbox mounts can give trouble easy repair.

Thanks for the replies chaps.
There is a bearing which supports the propshaft halfway along its length...but that seems fine. Got them to check the mounts(as my old mini had the same symptoms and it was down to the engine mounts)but they were ok.
The comment about the diff is interesting. Looking at the paperwork from the last service it seems they replaced a rear diff seal. Would wear in the rear diff produce this effect ?
Cheers

To test the diff wear you would need the measure the "backlash" of the diff. Simple to measure, just how much free twist/rotation on the pinion into the diff.
You local daler should be able to do this.

Quick update :
The dealer eventually accepted there was a problem. Turns out there was excessive wear in the rear diff (checked side by side with a new one on the bench ). They replaced it and it has made a huge difference. Bill - £3,700
Extended Warranty paid for itself this time !
Nice to get it fixed.
How much is an extended warranty, by the way?
