Hi,

I am looking for an answer for a friend. The question is: Can you chip a VW/Audi by plugging a laptop in and upgrading/changing the software? i.e. without requiring new actual hardware or chip.

I have a laptop and also the correct cables/software for connecting to the car and changing service intervals / reading errors etc.

Car is a '53' plate 100bhp PD Diesel 1.9.

Yes, remove panel under the ash tray. Plug in, play. My Gti T was only out of sight ten seconds, 50hp nice.

If that's "VAG-COM" or similar you can't remap the ECU with it. That's not what it's designed for as its just a diagnostic tool

Jabbasport/RevoTechnik etc CAN do laptop remaps via the OBD port but the software is somewhat more specialised & expensive.

No we have Bosch's ESI(tronic) software; it does lots of cars and is (surely) much more advanced than VAG-COM..

Anyway thanks, the question is answered - yes you can reprogram the existing stock ECU, that's all I was wondering.
