hi all - i'd value some advice please.

i've an A3 1.9 tdi (130) - old shape 2003. had it from new and serviced as needed.

now in the last few weeks/months the temperature gauge has been behaving erratically. seems it takes longer to climb out of the 'cold' position. then while driving or even idling, it can drop from 'warm' to 'cold' position in a few seconds. you can even see the needle fluctuating if you watch it. also now never seems to be able to get up to the 'normal' 90 deg position (vertical) it used to - even on 15-20 mile stop/start drives.

now the heater works fine and the coolant level is ok. i took it back to audi and they tested it, said the gauge was registering the correct temp, so basically they could not find the fault. said it could be one of 3 things but as it was working at the time did not know which to replace. suggested observing and reviewing if it got worse or stopped working all together. not very happy as it's just this side of 3 yr old so in warrenty. don't want to have to fork out a load of money if it goes tits up in a few months.

got it booked in again as it's getting worse and i'm annoyed by it. if they say the same again i'm going to take one of them for a drive so he can see how the gauge behaves.

can anyone offer any insight into the problem - i'd value any help.

many thanks
david

Sounds like bad dealer attitude - they fund the 3rd years warranty so have an incentive to wiggle out of doing anything that would cost them.

Do they care about making you, their customer happy? If they're not smart enough to work out which of A,B,C are wrong they should change all of them.

First step is to get them to admit it is a problem, and that it occurred in the warranty period. Do not be fobbed off until warranty expires or you will end up paying for it yourself. If you get no satisfaction, complain to trading standards and direct to Audi (not Audi dealer).

Get a passenger to video the dash while you drive?
