gearboxes, are they all bad?
Discussion
Hi Eveyone,
Just want your thoughts on VW gearboxes. I’ve got an R reg 1.4 mk4 polo, and I find that if I'm a little quick with the gear change when cold I crunch the synchromesh. To be fair, only the synchromesh between 1st and 2nd however just wondered if anyone else has this kind of issue with there pride n joy?
Thanks all,
Ash

This was a common problem on mk2 golfs
I've had mk1,mk2 and mk3 Golf diesel vans all over 200,000miles, never had a problem with a gearbox
Let me rephrase the word 'problem'... as in the synchro going between 1st and 2nd thus making it slightly 'harder' than normal to change between them (mainly only effects changing down to 1st)...
....as I said once you're used to it its easy to live with (as I have)..
Possibly this isn't the same as what you're describing with your Polo..

The Mk1, 2 & 3 Golfs, Jetta's, Vento's, Lupo's, the Polo in question and my Scirocco all share the same '020' gearbox. Crunching from 1st to 2nd when cold is quite common and as such, not really considered a problem. You can either put synthetic oil in the gearbox or make a slower, more deliberate gearchange to avoid the crunch.
After literally a mile the gearbox oil should have enough heat to stop this from happening.
It's just a quirk of these boxes - there's no doom approaching, they more or less all do it so some extent.
