When I switch the onboard computer to show current real-time fuel consumption it shows a figure that goes up and down like a yo-yo. One minute it's reading 15mpg, next it's reading 200mpg, without any major differences in the amount of throttle input. Is this normal behaviour, or does it sound like I have a malfunction? It seems to work ok when I switch it to show the average mpg for the journey so far (getting about 21mpg, which is better than I feared before I bought it!). Thanks.

Perfectly normal, the "instant" economy figure will vary depending on throttle position, gradients, flies farting in front of the car etc.

All the VAG fuel computers are the same and if you want to work out your real average consumption, use a calculator, it'll be much more accurate

Not correct
On later Audi models, switch engine off, restart and flick through the modes and the average miles/gall will be revealed by the onboard. Can be set for overall or 1 distance journey

Mine dose go from 5mpg to 200mpg, but not for no reason, I do have to try, ie, hammer it in 2nd and 3rd or take my foot off in 6th down hill. John

The instant read out is pointless, distance travelled would be far better. An average of 21 or so is about right but check the real average by brimming the tank each time and calculating it yourself. So far I have had three B6 S4's and on one of them the average over-read by about 1.5mpg. S4's are great cars...enjoy and Happy Christmas.

Excuse me?

If you want to correct feel free, but you can shove your rolling eyes smiley where Rudolph's nose doesn't shine.

If they tend to over-read then I'd rather not know the accurate figure. Managed 25mpg on a run round the M25 yesterday, although the other half was sitting in the passenger seat. Funny how I always seem to get higher consumption when she's with me, despite her huge personal bulk

my golf v6 4motion computer tells me my average is around 26mpg. so i tested it. brimmed the tank, ran it for 300 miles and brimmed it again and worked out the consumption to be 22mpg. i now take the computer reading with a pinch of salt...
