Recently purchased a Golf tdi110 and noticed it had a intermittent rough idle which lasted about 3 or 4 seconds,Vw main dealer had it for 5 days driving it and on diagnostics and proclaimed the Fuel pump was at fault which was then changed under warranty, guess wot the problem is still there,i then took to a Diesel specialist who hooked it up to there diagnostics and found no fault other then the foot brake sensor which i,ve changed.
The problem manifests it,s self tenfold when i fit the tunings boxes that i,ve trialed over the last months so i end up taking them off which is annoying as the performance is awsome when they are connected.
I,ve noted that the diesel managment light comes on every now and again and the engine clatters louder then normal when i first start up from cold for about 5 seconds, does this sound like one of the injectors,i,m at the point where i,m close to giving up on the car and selling it as Vw main dealer don,t know what there doing and the diesel specialist just rushed in and changed the fuel pump and now just scratches his head!!

Is the 110 a Pumpe Duse? To the best of my knowledge, airflow meters are not an uncommon failure point on the TDIs. Does it misbehave when hot only, cold only or randomly?

Re the startup clatter, they all do it to some extent, it's the hydraulic lifters that take a few seconds to pump up with oil. Normally it's worst on a stone cold start but should go within seconds. It's best to just let the engine idle on its own until the noise goes, don't rev it to encourage oil flow. You will probably find as the oil ages between services the noise gets worse - you could be due a service.

No.

As for the problem itself there could be any number of things causing this. I would like to see the injectors being tested to eliminate them fisrt.

MAF would be a good place to start. It's a VAG weak point, not just on the TDi's.

Exchange Units from £70 ish at the dealers IIRC.

Is the management light you're talking about the little orange silouette of an engine. If so, thats the lambda probe warning. It comes on with tuning boxes installed after a while generally due to the higher emissions involved. See my profile for general experience with my tdi. A little bit of an uneven idle here as well, but nothing that gets worse when the box is plugged in.

Usually MAF sensor failure is combined with poor performance (cannot meter airflow propely)..
