Audi S3 wierd noises
Discussion
I have just bought a 2000 Audi S3 210bhp with 60000 miles on the clock. It has had the cambelt changed in the last few thousand miles by the previous owner. When the car starts, there is a large whining noise coming from the engine that goes up and down in pitch when you rev the engine. It is particularly loud under 2500 rpm but seems to get quieter when the engine is revved hard. Is this normal? The car drives absolutely fine with the turbo doing exactly what it should but i am concerned that this noise isn't right. Any ideas on what it could be are appreciated as i don't want to take it to an Audi dealership and get spanked for the diagnostics check. I wanted to take it to Fontain which is an Audi specialist near where I live but they are fully booked until mid January 2006!! Any advice on where i can take it in Berkshire / Bucks which isn't a main dealer but a specialist would be appreciated, as well as any ideas on what the noise might be? Cheers Adam
If Fontain are fully booked, try The Auto Pool. They're a well established Audi specialist located behind the old Fontain showroom in Iver, and were always great with my S3. Check out their website:

AmD arn't too far away (Bicester) and they know there stuff, not the cheapest by a long way though. They replaced my engine and turbo earlier this year. If there is something your worried about i'd get it checked by someone with a brain sooner rather than later!

Cambelt noises can be caused by a number of things, such as (has already been mentioned) incorrect tension.
However, other sources of noise can be from the cam gear that the belt runs over, the water pump gear, tensioners and the crank gear itself.
all of these can give the niose youve described, and usually occur upon fitting a new cambelt.
Best get it checked, just in case.

Unless my geography is worse than i think it is, then you should be within a reasonable distance of QST.
