Anyone owned or driven a diesel A8 (old model)? If I understand correctly they come in either 2.5 v6 or 3.3 v8 versions. They're getting rather cheap on mobile.de I'm guessing the 2.5 is a little lethargic, but from what I have found so far 3.3 is 220bhp...

Wondering what they're like for performance, handling, fuel consumption and comfort. If I have to go down the diesel route, I want some luxury too!

I own an Audi A8 2.5 TDi and one reach 120 - 130 fully loaded on a German autobahn, hypotetically of course.

One can drive London to Milano on almost a tank of fuel. And there is not a chance of a backache.

It is a nice, understated car. Cheap to run and totally loyal.

The 2.5 V6 TDI is a great engine. We used to have an Allroad with the same lump in it - 180 bhp as standard. Took it to www.amdtechnik.com for a remap and it pushed out 240 bhp and 350+ lb/ft of torque.

You could never want for more from the engine - it just kept on pulling and would give any large engined petrol car a good run for it's money.

The Allroad is about the same weight as the A8 (1.8 tonnes), so you should get fairly good performance and consumption out of it - 32 mpg long term average.

thanks Mook

will ask for a potential upgrade

The NEW A8 has a smaller boot and it somewhat too aggressive. I still prefer the old style. Time maybe to give a new lease of power to the "old faithful"

Question: what about the insurace company? brakes should be upgraded as well? bigger wells are nice but is it a proper thing to do?

TIA

Perhaps another route if you are looking at a cheap well specked car..

Skoda Superb 2.5 TDI Elegance.

I have recently sold mine after covering 65k in 18 months.
Average MPG 38
Auto triptronic
Full Leather
Heated front and rear seats
Electic seats both; drivers with memory
Sat nav
CD Changer with Harmon/Kardon speakers
Xenon lights
Traction control/Stability
Rain sensing wipers
warnings for low this that and the other
Arival lights
Countless airbags
Full size alloy wheel
Not to mention the umbrella in the door.

Car was faultless.

Funnily enough I'm looking into these at the moment as well, they just seem SUCH a bargain with the massive depreciation. I was looking at a 2003 4.2 V8 or a 2005 3.0 V6, but then I realised that they would continue to depreciate to such an extent that I would still lose a fortune. So now I'm looking into MY 2000 for abot 10k - and they are looking pretty impressive for that sort of money.

The insurance went up by £70 a year with the AmD remap - but, as ever, it's all dependent on your age and driving record. Didn't need to uprate the brakes, but it was never used for hard driving (e.g. track days) - I never could imagine going round a track in an Allroad

Bigger wheels always look great on an A8 - 19" S8 wheels look fantastic and really fill out the arches well - I prefer OEM style wheels, rather than aftermarket ones, although I'm partial to the BBS CH wheels on an R32...
