Audi A5 coupé due in 2007

Range-topping, M3-baiting RS5 to get 420bhp V8

Audi Nuvolari concept
Audi Nuvolari concept
Audi is to launch an A4-based coupé in 2007, according to a story in Autocar this week. The range-topping A5, Audi's answer to the M3, will get Audi's 4.2-litre 420bhp V8 and four-wheel drive -- it's effectively a replacement for the quattro. The concept was wheeled out in 2003 at the Geneva Motor Show (see link below for pics).

The car will be of unitary construction, made of steel and use mechanical elements from the A4 and larger A6. A full four seats are planned -- it's not a 2+2 -- and it'll be practical, with 400 litres of luggage space. As a comparison, the current Porsche 911 has a luggage volume of 130 litres.

Engines available will include 150bhp naturally aspirated and 197bhp turbocharged 2.-0-litre powerplants, both four-pot motors, plus a 255bhp 3.2-litre V6. There'll be a brace of diesels too. The range-topper will be the RS5.

Looks very very tempting if they can get the pricing right. Fuel economy of powerful Audis is $hit when compared to the competition. Perhaps they can solve that with a performance diesel option with over 250 bhp and 450ft/lb torque would sell very well.

dunno about that mate , my A8 4.2 gives 23mpg day to day and on a long run up to 28mpg cruising at 70-85 mph whis is realistically about the best you will average speed you will manage

I get 28mpg at steady 80mph in a 280bhp Audi and it never dips below 23mpg. Similar or better than a Scooby, which is smaller and lighter.

Yup. I have a feeling that the diesel consumption would be even better though...

More like the M3 is BMW'S answer to the Quattro, and they've still not got it right.

O/T - Is it just me or are BMW 3s rather claustrophobic?

But the RS4 has 4 doors, this is an A4 derived coupe like the M3 is a 3-series derived coupe.

What I find interesting is the nomenclamature; aren't BMW's coupe variants of the three going to be called the 4 series or so I've heard? Then again, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery...

I hope what carries over into future Audi design is the tail lights of the Nuvolari concept - get this, I began to find the car beautiful when I unlocked it in Grand Turismo 4. Yeah, I think I'm a nerd. Nonetheless, Audi must understand that style is going to play a large part too. Dare I say it (new RS4 excepted), the mark lacks aggression in its performance models. Look at the S4 for example. And whilst I'll accept that subtle menace is a good form of styling (RS6 sedan in gunmetal is one of my favourtite cars), for this end of the market, its not enough. But don't make it ugly mind; Koala's really are quite docile animals, but there nose doesn't flatter automotive forms too well.

My final suggestion is to engineer some rear-wheel drive balance into the car - how many people would fancy an Audi that can cause beatifully controlled tail out drifts? I know I certainly would. A Subaru-style torque distributer would be a fantastic addition, provided the inherent balance of a near front-mid engine can be achieved.

Ali.

I've read that the new RS4 has torque distributed to give rearward bias. Agree about the silly grill styling, and they do need "menace" (which once they did so well).

Actually, why do cars need to look manacing? Why not just look civilised?

Hi Matt , its the 4.2 lt , sure if you beat it you can drop it into the teens but on trips where traffic is heavey (most) i just relax and just go with the flow

But the 28mpg i achieved on a trip from Cologne to Frankfurt and back averaged about 130kmph , it really is a remarkable all rounder the A8

edit to add Petrol ,,, sorry chaps forgot about that

I thought the S4 was the answer to the M3. Did the S4 not beat the M3 round the Top Gear track? Was the RS4 not supposed to be a harder version of the model like the M3 CSL but not as unusable?

Just to add - Nice looking car. I like it alot.
