Started this tonight and had a nasty rattling from the enigne. I left it running long enough to try and see where it was coming from, but then turned it off fast. Before it makes an expensive trip to AMD does anyone have any suggestions? it has had the cambelt done in the last 5K miles and a very full service. It has plenty of oil and no other obvious issues. I have done 30 miles in it today with no noticeable problem so whatever this was it came on suddenly. there are no warning lights and no sign from oil or coolant of a problem. The noise is not from the Turbo side but from the manifold side and seems to be more from the front of the engine although I cannot be sure. The engine was warm when I started it having only just come in 20 minutes earlier.

think this might be expensive... doh!

Sounds like something has worked lose. Did the noise increase/decrease under revs?

Could be something rattling while on idle. (I had this when I damaged the heat shield on the exhaust

If all else running OK probably the A/C compressor. Mine's had a rattle up front (traced to A/C unit, very noticeable when cold, for about the last 50,000 miles. Everything works great otherwise.

OTOH it may be something very serious so get it checked pronto!

Cold be all sorts of things. Loose A/C clutch mech like mine, visco clutch failing, water pump on the way out (although that should only be 5k old).

It really could be anything at all, and I'll stick my neck out, probably not serious. I had a terrible racket out of my old Audi. Thought it was on it's last. The 'cage' holding the fan in close proximity to the radiator had come lose - a bolt had fallen out. Sounded horrendous when the engine was being reved. Was nothing in the end though.

The AAN seems to be either running fine, or completely busted.

Beat me to it! That lot have forgotten more than I know about the 20v I5 engine.

Cheers,
