hi, just wondered what you guys think about this, would i be able to basiclly swap for one, mines on an X, 57k, leather, climate, all the usual stuff, full VW service history, its in good condition, a couple of stone chips but nothing major, do you think i might be able to do a straight swap for a TDI 150 or will a trader kick me in the balls?, and privatly is the 4 motion a difficult car to sell?.
also with the TDI 150 what sort of performance drop should i expect, i know thier slightly slower and i guess top end wouldnt be as high but doesnt a chip take them to near 200bhp anyway plus give it a hell of a lot more torque? the reason i ask is ive started to work further away from home and the 4 motion is costing a fortune in fuel to get there and back, plus its too cold for the bike.
what are your thoughts on it, worth the trade or stick with rubbish economy?

The Golf TDi's seem to hold their prices very well.

I've seen 51 Reg cars with 80K+ on them for over 8 grand. But today i saw a very nice Bora Sport PD150, 53 Reg with 60K on the clock, full leather and all the toys for just over 9K...
Might be worth considering.

as for the performance, a remapped PD130 or 150 will be more than adequate i think

Well, the only thing you will miss is the traction. when the Turbo comes in with the Higher output Diesels, the torque is really something. ESP on a damp day is difficult not to get flashing... throw it around a corner and hit the throttle and she will scrabble for grip too.
in Gear acceleration, I find the Diesel better than its petrol bigger brothers.

Cruise at 80 in 6th, hit the throttle to overtake and your the naughty side of 3 figures with ease, and still averaging 45+mpg.
the V6's on a motorway start to pull away after 120ish (Ill let you decide how and where this was tested )

ive kind of got the impression there wouldnt be a lot in it between a chipped TDI150 and the 4 motion, the V6 is good and i imagine might have a slight edge but in no way is it worth mpg figures in the early 20s for the performance it delivers, i know the diesels do hold thier money well but the V6 is still a good car i would be hoping to get £8.5-£9k for mine which should get me a decent TDI 150? but then i guess 70000 miles to a diesel isnt very much, with having o drive further now its not acase of cant afford to fuel up the V6 for work but not for what im getting for the money if that makes sense?,45MPG seems very appealing,by the way what are they like noise wise? is the TDI quite a quiet unit?
that Bora seems amazing value but i think iwould prefer the Golf, also do most of them come with leather and climate?
thanks for the help guys.

To be honest, you dont have to chip either the 130 or the 150 to see acceleration in gear figures similar to the V6. I came to work this morning.. taking it easy, managed to clock up 57mpg (in commuter traffic). My 130 is chipped to aprox 170ish bhp. its done 70,000 miles, and to be honest, the more mileage on the car, the faster it is. pre-chip, my 40,000 mile 130 was a hell of a lot faster than the wife's 7,000 mile 130.
Now, she refuses to drive my golf because it is so ferrocious. second gear and third gear acceleration is impressive, but to make swift progress you have to work the 6 speed gearbox.
6th is also very good for sitting on motorways at 50mph, and equally as good for 120 down French Motorways.

Noise wise.. yes, they rattle when cold, but on a run you just dont notice it.

What you do notice though is at 1800 rpm the turbo pressure starts to make a difference. Keep your foot to the floor and it will hit 4000rpm in an instant, lighting up both front tyres (with ESP off!).

We took my TDI to Le Mans this year instead of our 4 litre TVR. The Golf did 1000 miles on 2 fills of fuel. one day it was so hot (and my wife being 5 months pregnant) we sat in the car for almost 5 hours with the engine running and the aircon up on full!!!.

Im converted. Being a Petrol Head at Heart, I was always brought up to believe Diesel was for Farmers, but modern Diesel engines, especially the higher output models really kick ass.

My Golf, when the 3 year lease is up, should have 96,000 miles on it. the Minimum future value VW finance put on the car was £4100. I am planning to either keep the car, or move to a BMW 330 or V50 (depending on how they drive)

thanks for all the help your input has been very helpful, i have had a look and providing i get the right money for my car i should be able to get a good 1,
i found this on e bay earlier:http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VW-VOLKSWAGEN-G
this looks good value particularly as diesels usualy attain much higher milages than thier petrol brothers, if i got something like that i wouldnt stand to lose much in a years time when it had 70k ish on the clock?

Been in a 130 & 150 Tdi - they can really light up the traction control compared to a V64Motion, but are very economical. Have you considered an LPG conversion for the V6?

it would be a handy thing to do but i dont really see it as a worthwhile investment as i probably wouldnt get my money back on it when i sell the car,my plan is to get the golf TDI for 1 year and then i want to buy a TVR so i would like to keep my costs down if possible, also just wondering, what kind of figure would a chipped TDI 150 put out?, i usually dont use traction unless its wet anyway and i find FF cars are fairly easy and predictable to control, its FR that can catch me out

For lots of useful info go to :

www.uk-mkivs.net/forum/default.asp

I have been running a remapped TDI 150 for 9 months, puts out circa 180 bhp and 280 ftlbs of torque, I love it to bits get 40 + mpg however I drive it, my car is an 04 reg with every option except sat nav, it is comfortable fast and very economical.

I have a friend with the same car but seriously modded, it is putting out circa 210 bhp, with porsche boxter brakes and decent suspension, he surprises lots of quick cars when he uses it on trackdays!

Hope this helps

The Ebay one looks good. Looks nice and standard.
Only non standard thing I can see is the GT badge on the Front Grill.

Generally 30 - 40bhp can be achieved just by having a modified and remapped chip added to the car. Cost is about £500. for this you also usually get a rolling road session too to proove the setup.
I believe AMD do a kitt for the VW's
to get over 200 they usually start replacing exhausts and intercoolers. This is where it becomes expensive.

Check out their website. They list VW and also the 130 / 150 bhp Diesel Golfs too.

If you get one and mod it, look for somewhere that does Serial Port Uploads. No need to open the ECU these days

Jabba, APR, Revo etc
