Of all the cars I've had (too many to count!), there is one, some years ago, that sticks in my mind.
It was very ordinary on the outside, but very special underneath. It was responsive, tactile, and a great handler. All I ever wanted was a bit more power!

With a view to finding a track car 'sleeper', I have got a winter project into my head, and for my sins (yet more cash going to be spent on this addiction to speed and handling!), I have started looking for a base car for my project. I'm looking for a clean Golf Mk1 GTi - and do you know what.... I think I may have found just the car. Infact, all it needs is a roll cage and an LSD, and I'll be ready to go!

Take a look at this link and let me know what you think.

It looks like an honest, well sorted car. Does anyone have experience of anything similar?

Cheers
Neil

We had a student at TVR who had a Mk1 GTi almost identical to that in terms of understated looks and silly power. His engine started life as a Corrado G60, but had a hybrid Saab turbo instead of the g-lader. At least 250bhp, but he could never get an accurate reading on the TVR rolling road because when it was really boosting it'd just climb out of the rollers.

The most extraordinary giggle-inducing car I've ever been in - the acceleration was mental, accompanied by big whooshing noises and wastegate flutter.

As I remember, it did the 1/4 mile in 14.0, but he reckoned the traction problems were costing at least a second...

748 please stop posting threads all over PH on that car, im in love with it but have an empty wallet so its a bit frustrating!

I should flippin' hope it does the 1/4 in under 14, when my lard arsed Mk2 with a piddly fracton of that bhp does it in 14.8

I may be getting my numbers mixed up - though in my defence it was over 5 years ago and we were smoking a lot of dope back then, so my memory isn't what it was...

Sssurely shome mishstake

Nah you might be correct in your recolection, tough to get low 1/4s or 0-60s in big power (or more accuratly big torque) fwds without launch control/TC & all that- like the mainly dutch loons do at GTi inters with their mental sc'd 350+bhp 16vs etc.

For example see Golf+ this month & the VR6 frenzy article, in Mk2 & caddy's etc 200+bhp, yet not really any impressive times vs the fairly tamely tuned & lacking in torque 16v's of a month or so before.
