hi Mark .sorry its a saloon ,massive boot though ,mpg is a interesting subject as on a recent trip to devon at pretty high speeds 4 up i got 27 mpg ,my dads volvo diesel on the same trip only managed 35 ,would have thought audi would have been alot worse just goes to prove what a great engine it is !simon
Tuxman - I sympathise with you - my A6 4.2 has been for sale on Pistonheads for a while:
I think I'm going to hang on to it - they are fabulous cars, with incredible specification, and I don't want to give it away for the sake of getting better mpg - ours typically does around 25mpg anyway. Pound for pound, I can't think of anything that you can compare it to, or replace it with - 300bhp V8, 4 wheel drive, electric Recaros, sat-nav etc, >155mpg, 0-60 in <6.5 seconds etc.etc.
Hav you tried Autotrader or selling to an Audi specialist?

im looking for a avant and not a saloon
Mark
I'd really consider how many times you are going to want to move a wardrobe around before writing off the saloon. The boot is enourmous and I do believe longer than the avant. The seats also fold down for a longer load if required.
It's a lot of car for the money
Mark
As an outsider looking in so to speak, could the problem be that basically the saloon a similar mechanical spec with associated running costs to the A8?
Maybe if people are going to spend big money on maintenance then it's the A8 they want unless they're specifically looking for an Estate?
Also, looking at the pics above, are the rear arches slightly flared to accomodate a wider rear track?

Yes - the A6 4.2 has flared wheel arches front and rear as the S6 and RS6.
You may well be right in the comparison with the A8/S8 - having said that, if you compare the equivalent BMWs, I would say that the 5 series was more sought after than a 7 series with the same engine capacity.

So buy one of these bang 19" RS6 aloys on and you have the look of the RS6 for a fraction of the cost.

Great cars, but the average private buyer would be terrified by the servicing costs and by the potential repair bills.
Plus as they get another couple of years older this type of car will be more or less worthless so it takes a certain kind of person to be able to accept that. (Or it's a matter of finding someone who doesn't realise that.)
Audi mechanic's (sorry Technicians) would be the ideal sort of owners for these cars. Try hanging around your local Audi dealer (or your friendly local independant might know someone).
Or, if all else fails, try an auction - I'm frequently amazed by how high the prices are at Blackbushe, reported on the HonestJohn website.
I've also never heard of 7 seater Avants.

Is the Avant a Seven seater??
I think the Avant could be specced from the factory with a rearward facing bench seat. I don't know if it can be retrofitted though.
As for the S6 - they seem to be fairly pricey when compared to S8s or even M5s of similar age, although that could be something to do with their rarity. I was also put off the A6 by the 3-star NCAP rating; strange how things like that become important when you have kids.
If I *needed* seven seats, I'd probably end up looking at the VXR Zafira.

A quicK google finds one mention of 7 seats on a previous model A6 and suggests that they're removeable when not required (so it *might* be possible to retrofit - although it might be a major and expensive job). There's no mention of 7 seats in the latest model though.
I wonder how many were sold - I've never heard of it before and I'm reasonably familier with Audi's?

Mate of mine fixes crashed cars.He reckons the problem stems from how much Audi charge per hour for repairs etc (£120 per hour was the figure quoted)This is putting the trade off second hand ones, and the fear-factor is filtering down to private buyers. Many insurance companies are now writing-off crashed Audis whcih they may not previously have done, purely because of the labour costs, not the parts.
