VW Passat TDIs over heating

On the motorway today the car started to get hot,AA had a look ,they decided to take us home.The second fan on the radiator doesn't come on when it gets up to temperature,also the alarm keeps going off and the car locks itself now and then.I've disconnected the battery for a quiet life 
So has anyone any ideas before i take it to the dealers?
