Hi all,

Hoping to look at a 2017 GTD and wondered if there is anything to look out for?

It’s done 60k miles, DSG and has full VW history.

One thing I did notice that being pre facelift, it appears to have Bi Xenon headlights but the dealer blurb is stating they are LED, which I didnt think came in until the 7.5?

It has the square type of DRL.

Rust on the rear arches where the body meets the bumper, our 18 plate GTD Estate started going from there, otherwise faultless over 5 years and 42k.

I had a 66 plate GTD estate for 5 years and nearly 80k

Things to note from my experience:

- the wheels all corrode they are terrible. Budget for a refurb at some point

- check to see if it still has the coolant tank with a silica bag. These can burst and wreck the heater matrix. Put the fans on max heat and it should heat across all vents. If it only comes through on the passenger side the matrix is goosed. The bag burst on mine, blocked the matrix and liked to burn through coolant until sorted. New matrix, updated coolant tank and lengthy flushing procedure cost me over 900 quid at a specialist.

- Check the seat bolsters. The bottom ones aren’t unheard of to collapse.

- Check it’s had cambelt and water pump done. VW updated the schedule to a much longer one but not sure I’d trust the pump to last that long.

- The engines are pretty unrefined for a modern diesel. Don’t expect a nice purr from them.

-check the rubber drain for the boot lid. It’s basically a rubber tube that drains water from the badge handle out the car. These fail and fall off, meaning water either sits in the tailgate or finds its way into the boot. An updated part is available from VW and is easy to fit on hatch’s (less so on estates).

- They like to do a DPF regen for fun. I would do a 100 mile journey on mine and then would decide to regen the next morning when pottering about town.

Apart from the silica bag incident mine basically was faultless for the entire time I had it. Only needed service items or wear and tear. It would easily do mid 50s on a run at 70ish fully loaded.

Yes the prefacelift are bi-xenons. Not the greatest lights when new and probably lost their brightness a bit now due to age but you can buy uprated bulbs. They are linked to the steering too so turn round corners on country lanes. You can set the lights to “sport” in the individual drive mode which always made me chuckle.

Do the later models suffer the same issues?

Just now looking at a 2020 1.5 Tsi so that’s 7.5?

There are both pre, and post facelift cars in 2017. It's not uncommon for the online look ups (Autotrader etc.) to mix them up.

I'm running a Readers Cars thread about our 2016 DSG model, bought about 18 months ago for general family duties.

It's a very good all-round car, regardless of fuel. The Mk7 is a fine platform and the 2.0 TDIs have the advantage of coming with a far better DSG than the sub-2.0 petrols.

Most of the foibles will be generic to the MQB platform or Mk7 Golf, things like creaky lower suspension arm bushes but nothing major. Just 10,000 miles in ours so far but lots of short journeys alongside the longer ones, with no problems at all to report other than the odd bushing squeak.



Edited to add: 2016 GTDs came with keyless access / start and winter pack, which I think was an option on earlier and facelifted cars.

Thanks everyone for the info.

Well, the 2020 turned out to be a no go. It always pays to go and physically see any used car. Paint blemishes, dents scratches, full service history that wasn’t available to view and spare wheel missing, although I think the 7.5 came with an inflator kit?

Anyway, I looked up the silica bag issues and it does seem to be a straight forward fix with a replacement expansion tank assuming it has the problematic one or hasn’t been done already.

So, hopefully off to see the GTD tomorrow.

Full main dealer history apart from the last one, and a spotless MOT history with the only advisory being rear pads week b thin two years ago which appear to have been done!

If also appears to have the golf match wheels on it as they look to be 16” instead of 17 but I can’t say I’m bothered if it irons out the ride a bit!

should be 18s

that would be a red flag for me, fitted with the wrong alloys taken from a poverty spec Golf ?

Yeah I did wonder that but I can understand if the ride was hard on the 18s and the previous owner wanted to soften it up a bit.

I’m going to get a photo of the chassis number when i go to see it and decode it to see what’s what.

I mean, it wouldn’t bother me as it will spend a lot of its time on unmade roads so having tyres worth a bit more give could be useful!

you'd be wise to declare that to your insurer if you buy the car.

We've an 18 plate on 18s and its really comfy! It's been a great car too, we love it.

could be as simple as 1 alloy was damaged and at £1200 or whatever to replace it it was wiser to get a set from a breakers yard.

Also opens up tyre choice with better value tyres as well as a more compliant drive.

I have 18" s on my 2016 Golf Alltrack would have preferred the standard 17s or better still 16's.


Mine's the one on the left.

I just pumped the reg into Black circles and it does indeed show that it should have 18" but as i said earlier, im not overly bothered unless it affects the handling massively and practicality wise as you said, the choice and cost of tyres would give a much better choice. Just looks a bit weird as they dont quite fill the arches!

Another quick Q, did these come with Carplay/Android as standard?

Mine is late 2015 and doesn't have carplay or android.

On 105,000 though, mine is a manual and it's been excellent.

my 2016 Alltrack is fairly high spec.

Doesn't have carplay etc as standard. It's there but needs to be a VW dealer to activate it. For a hefty fee of course.

It's not activated on mine.

I did wonder about something like this this but a remote one:

The standard installed (disc) sat nav is pretty poor.

I've had this car two years now (well Jan 25) and I haven't figured out if a post code can be used or not. In fact I think it cannot be.

Mind you the sat nav on my previous lease 2020 Q5 was pretty naff too.

Google how to activate Carplay / AA. I did and followed some helpful guide and software downloads from Congo & Duke on an obscure forum - it worked great, and all I needed was my laptop and an SD card.

Otherwise plenty of people can do it for you, for a small fee.

I believe that the GTD Blueline derivative achieved slightly lower Co2 via smaller 17inch alloys, meaning it slipped into a lower tax bracket. To my knowledge this would have been only on an early Mk7.5 Golf though.

Fitted with winter tyres? The original owner keeping the 18s?

Thanks everyone.

No the car with the 17” rims had summer tyres on.

And the body work has some bad respray on the from bumper and os wing and the interior wasn’t that good either.

So!

The hunt continues with me widening my search a bit.

I have now found a 66 plate with original 18s albeit refurbed, with a full set of cross climates fitted.

It has a full service history including cambelt and then a DSG at 43k.

As it turns out, the specialist that has looked after it, is in fact local to us, meaning the car was local to us before it ended up 70 miles away.

So if it is any good, it will be returning to its home town biggrin

Off to see it tomorrow!
