Been looking at these recently.
I am aware of insurance, undersealing etc

My query is about the radio, I've read the FM frequency is off and the nav won't work.

Is the best solution to change the head unit?
Ideally want DAB, carplay etc.

From what I've read about JDM mk5/6/7 golfs in the UK you can obtain the UK maps and upload it via the SD card onto your head unit to correct the sat nav. Then within VCDS/Vagcom software you can change the cars region to UK and get English(US) display for all the menus.

To upgrade further to the latest spec mk7 equipment in the UK there is a thread here which has a lot of useful information on the coding side of things & what equipment is available

not sure what you mean about undersealing, the Mk7 Golfs from Japan are exactly the same as the UK ones. I import cars from Japan and have been underneath Golfs, A4s and Polos and they have the same undersealing as UK cars.

You can get dial kits from Lockwood. To get the Satnav and radio working you'll need to install the EU firmware. I would post a link but the rules won't let me so Google More Incredible Bash for a script you put on an SD card which will update the MIB unit to allow it to accept the EU firmware which is available from a website called MIB Solutions, its all free to download
