It's 80k according to the book, I haven't been thorough enough to check whether in practice it is better to do it early. Not heard any tales of woe (apart from the price!)

VAG seem to massively over-estimate their cambelt change intervals for some reason.

Personally i wouldn't let it go beyond 60K just to be safe.

I have a 1999 A6 4.2 and did the cambelt service at 77K - garage said that the belt was VERY worn. There are several pulleys, tensioners plus water pump etc which should be changed at the same time - adds cost, but worth it in the long run.

word of warning - when an Audi main dealer did the cambelt service on my previous A6 2.4 v6 it came back with one of the cats massively dented and shattered internally. Was replaced under warrenty by another (far superior) main dealer.
