I’m looking to buy a Golf R or S3 soon.

My budget doesn’t stretch to facelift models, as nice as the virtual cockpit is it’s not worth the extra outlay for me plus the 7th gear won’t be needed. I don’t mind manual but for this sort of car I think it needs to be DSG otherwise would be “settling”.

There are plenty manual 3 doors for sale at around £10K though I’d spend a bit more for a 5 door auto. What is the right price to pay for one? I’m conscious that the early cars are a decade old now. Part of me thinks it’s a lot of money for a relatively normal hatchback but then the newer cars are all more expensive, and the older ones seem really dated now.

From my research it seems the water pump and thermostat will fail so will take that into account. Furthermore reading about DSG Mechatronic failure does worry me a bit as it seems it can go regardless of it being serviced on time. I’d be hoping to get into a 60K mile DSG 5 door car then get dsg, haldex, oil serviced in the hope that keeps it all good for a while. Ideally i’d have a warranty which would cover most of the above, is there an aftermarket one that’s recommended if I bought a private vehicle?

I have looked into Japan imports, seems they will usually be 10 years old at newest to avoid IVA testing. Not sure if they come with any service history and if that’d be validated in the UK? Though do tend to have most of the options ticked.
