I'm currently looking at selling my TVR Chimaera which was my 2nd car and has now become my everday car (.....dont ask) and getting a quick and fun, but more practical everyday car.

I have been looking around and seen '99 S4's and '99 A6 4.2 V8's for similar money (£8-12k).

Size/space is not an issue for me, but I am interested in the pro's and con's of each with regards to servicing costs, performance, mpg, insurance, etc etc

Any thoughts??

If size & space is not an issue, I would avoid these cars. I've not driven the A6 but my S4 is a disapointing package. Quick & comfy motorway cruiser, but too much body roll, understeer & sloppy gearchange. Even with the quattro system, there is just too much weight out front. Not had to service it yet but mine averages about 22 mpg (mostly urban use).

For the same money you would get a (much better) E36 M3. All IMHO of course.

Hi Oli

£12k to spend? Sure you wouldn`t rather be driving this?

olih , don,t let people put you of audi,s there seems to be a lot of audi bashing on pistonheads, an audi a6 4.2 quattro would run rings around a bmw m3 in the wet ,and its build quality will last longer than the m3 can dream about ,belive me i,ve driven both ,i,ve been all over europe in mine and covered ground at a awsome rate ,ok dealers are crap but so are all the others ,my a6 quattro will skin my ultima in the wet and its chasis sticks like sh*t to a blanket in the dry ,best of all it is easy to live with ,i,v got to change mine for a estate (ford company car ) and its been a hell of a shock !!!!if you fancy a spin send me a mail i,ll let the car do the talking .simon

thats true. unfortunately many peoples opinions of how cars handle is what they just read in that esteemed collection of lovely photos called evo. given that the total character and handling of a car can be changed with a chip, a few degrees of camber, a few mm of ride height or different tyres it is clear that most comparisons are pretty pointless. so here's mine; £ for £ an s4 will run rings round pretty much anything

If they read it more carefully they'd remember the A6 4.2 gave the E39 M5 a run for its money in ECOTY (1998/99, can't remember which year it was exactly).

FYI the 1.8T S4 has a lot more potential than the V8. A chip, and some small tuning modifications will see performance the same, but allows you the scope to go beyong that.
Personally, I'd go for the 4.2 V8, as it sounds great, and the performance is fine, and a lot smoother, but if you want to have all out speed, then go for the S4.

I'd have the A6

On the S4 the turbos are consumable between 70K and 90K miles

This does give you the opportunity to go to RS4 turbos but its a bill that could be avoided.

£ for £ an s4 will run rings round pretty much anything,absolutly right have had quattros for years and they are awsome ,my a6 has never had a moment that it could not handle will miss it like mad when its gone as my new work car is only 2 wheel drive its going to be a shock to the system ,small note on topgear the s4 was quicker than the m3 in the dry so god nows what it would do in the wet !!!!simon

S4 = 2.7 & 2 turbos tho, the A4 1.8T quattro is a very different kettle of apples to an S4
