Hi there,

As per the title my 2012 B8 S4 has developed a noticeable rattle on cold start up I am assuming that will be the timing chain.

I was wondering if anyone has recently had this done and can give me an idea of cost. Looking at the parts at TPS they are over 1500 and to do the chains seems to be an engine out job so not cheap I'm guessing.

Cheers

TSB says upper chain tensioners, engine stays in car but 13 hrs labour (plus a bit for the tensioners themselves).

Whether you'd do that or yoink the engine and do the whole lot (15.2 hours plus labour for the chains themselves) I don't know. You'd want to be pretty confident it was the upper tensioners first.

Yeah I think you'd probably be as well doing the whole lot for peace of mind.

Budget some "while you're in there" money - you can bet garage will find oil leak, saggy engine mount etc. when it's apart.
