Appreciate help/comments on this

My other half has a mkiv 1.6 golf match on a 53 plate with only 2700 miles on the clock

My wife thinks the car is great but when I drive it I always think it has a problem with the engine mounting/gear change - the dealer has checked it but says it is normal

The symptoms are as follows

1. When you start the engine the gear stick jumps around when it starts. If you start the engine with the bonnet up you can see the engine rocks alot as the engine fires

2. When driving along in any gear (more noticeable in 3 /4 /5 ) if you accelerate and then lift off the throttle the gear stick move around

Is this a case of " they all do that sir" or should I take it back to the dealer.

When the car was new it was difficult to change gear - the dealer fixed this in the first week but I can't remember whether the current symptoms existed before they fixed the original problem

This is our first golf so don't know what is normal

thanks
Chris

Sounds fairly normal in this age of "must be perfectly quiet so lets use soft engine mounts".

Not unusual for a 'typical' FWD car with a rod mounted gearshift, but having said that the stick in my TDI doesn't move at all (of it's own accord). But then that's a different engine and a different gearbox.

Can't you get the dealer to let you drive another one for comparison, even if only to get you of their back?

My mum has a mk4 and i have been driving it lately and several times it has come right out of 1st when i have put my foot down, also the change from 1st to 2nd is difficult to say the least it seems like you do not go straight down but down and around something before going into 2nd the gear stick does move around abit when its in gear and you come off and on the throttle.
