Over last weekend the low coolant light came on for Mrs Cammy 1.4 tsi Golf. The level was next to nothing and I filled it up with VW coolant, bright pink in colour. I had seen a small 5cm puddle at the front of the car the week before, I assumed that there was a leak and guessed at the thermostat housing. Next morning there was another 5cm pink puddle at the front of the engine.

Local VW main dealers were poor, cannot book the car in for three weeks.

5 Star Garages in Huddersfield took the car in immediately and were really helpful, they did a pressure test and it came back all clear, no leaks. Their advice was the tank cap had probably failed, they replaced it and all was good. The cause of the second leak may have been down to me.

I should have checked the coolant level but, to be honest, I check the oil and the washer level and thats about it.

eta. intermittent leak is still there, if the car is level then a small pool at the front of the car, parked uphill and no leaks so I am guessing a cracked thermostat housing

2eta. Replaced the cap on the expansion tank, also changed the coolant pump.
