Hi

I recently bought an A6 2.0 sport on a 02 plate and was wondering how much oil these cars use. It has 29500 miles on the clock now but when I bought it, it had 27000 and that was nearly two months ago. I have had to top up the oil twice because the low warning has come on. I have checked the dipstick and that was reading was on minimum..so the warning light is working correctly. I use the car mostly on the motorways..does this seem high bearing in mind 2.5K miles and twice had to top up from minimum? I called Audi and they said, anything less than 600 miles per litre oil is poor..can anyone please give anymore info on this?

Regards
Dave

We have a Passat and I think they share the same engine (2.0 20 valve 130bhp). Ours has the same mileage on and is the same year and uses oil too. As a rough guide, ours seems to take 1 litre approx 5,000 miles after a service and needs topping up again when it goes to be serviced.

I wouldn't have thought that your oil consumption was anything to worry about, though I agree is can be inconvenient if you're used to a car with low or nil oil consumption.

Thanks MJK24

Yea it's probably looking like it's slightly less than 5K miles per litre. I was a bit worried that it had a leak or worse there was a problem with the engine.

I use to have an A4 1.8SE which never lost any oil from one service to another..I guess I was thinking this car would be like this.

Cheers

Bloody hell, my S6 uses oil and still doesn't get through that much, and that's with effectively two whole 2.0 engines. They are a bit lax with their tolerances, I think...

I'll say it's poor a 2-stroke would use less than that, If my car used that much oil I would demand a new engine.

In fact I had the engine replaced/rebuilt on a BMW 323 done under warranty, after the warranty had expired... and it wasn't using that much.

I've never been able to put any into the RS6 - in 17000 miles (10 months) It's always full when I look (serviced 8000 miles ago).

Like thats a lot of help! [/smug]

I find myself topping up the oil now and then on my 2002 A4 2.0 130bhp with 92,000 miles.

My previous 1999 A4 1.8 125bhp didn't use a drop of oil.

I get the feeling (ie not very scientific) that regular motorway use consumes more oil than stop-start motoring. I also see the occasional puff of smoke out of the exhuast, when pulling away from a stop after a motorway run.

I think it really is a case of 'they all do that sir'.

After more checks the car is is going from max to min on the dipstick between 800 and 900 miles..this cant be right?

I believe and correct me if I'm wrong the A6 2.0 Sport on an 2002 plate uses the ssi engine?

A friend of mine has spoken to head technician of an Audi dealership in London and he says that the valve guide oil seals should have been replaced under warranty because this particlar engine had a problem with the seals it should have the modified seals fitted. The warranty has now run out in June 2005, but when my brother owned the car and he took car back to the dealership he bought it from in the Nort West, to tell them about the oil consumption and they said it's not a problem it's the way the engine works! I bought the car a couple of months ago and I do a lot more mileage than my brother, 3k miles later and about 3 litres of oil feeling pretty cheesed off why didn't the dealership acknowledge the fact that warranty work was needed when my brother took it back to them? would he still have a case if he was to take it back now the warranty has expired?

I called two Audi dealerships and they said that they don't consider it a problem either, if the car was doing less than 600 miles per liter of oil then yes this is considered high consumption.

Can anyone advise me or just let me know your thoughts about this.

Regards
