Golf MK6 Free Play Steering
Discussion
Hi,
2009 MK6 2.0 TDI 176k
Free play in steering, failed MOT due to old rack (was genuinely worn) - then fitted an eBay rack with "only 51k" on it.
Looking back might have been better to fit a new one.
Free play is still there, super annoying as was quite £££ in labour fitting.
In terms of how the free play feels, if stationery and engine off - just the lightest touch moving the wheel left and right, is the free play.
I guess this must point towards the rack again, as worn inner / out track rod ends, will not show with just light wheel movement?
Especially as engine off and no power steering ?
Thanks

Its difficult to guess at really but it is a common problem.
I fitted a recon rack to a Mk5 with a similar issue and a knocking noise going over bumps etc, was an upgraded Mk6 recon rack and was £300.
You could maybe disconnect the column from the rack at the bottom inside the car and try to see where the play is, easy enough to do.
