Hi,

So I collected a 2022 B9.5 on Friday and on the long drive home I started to play with all the buttons and settings and I noticed that on trip 2 it was saying 8mpg at around 580 hours!
I was on the motorway and I rest it, before really thinking about it.
However now I’m really worried the car as either been doing nothing but tiny journeys or the previous owner just booted it constantly and I’m now in for a load of trouble down the road.
And to add sat to the wound it’s started smell of smoke in the car so obviously the previous owner was a smoker and the Audi dealer just cleaned the car and covered up the smell - from previous experience it’s impossible to get rid of the smell.

Totally ruined the experience .

Any idea thought about the mpg? Is it calculated simply used fuel over distance divided by total time . Or (as I’m hoping) it’s calculated over a given window (last tank/last month/ last 1000 miles)

It will be since that trip was reset - so 8mpg over the 580 hours since that trip started. Which is 12,000 miles at 20mph. How many miles has it done?

Tbh, if it smells of smoke and you are already having some regrets, I'd ask the dealer to swap it under the 30 day no quibble thing they have.

6500 miles, so 11mph.

I presume the 30 day swap thing has to be the same dealer or can it be any Audi dealer? I also thought it’s only applicable if there is a fault? I’ll ask tomorrow.

The air con bomb type things and a new cabin filter may deal with the smoke smell but are you sure its cigarette smoke and not the car?

The mpg seems a little low but not inconsistent with, say, driving in central London a lot. Cars are usually quite robust to enthusiastic use, especially the performance model, and presumably you have the balance of warranty.

I, too, have previously bought a smoked-in car and couldn't get rid of it properly (it was 5 years old at the time though). But at less than a year old I'd be surprised if it was irreversible, or perhaps not even been smoked in.

It's quite normal to have mixed feelings having just spent a huge amount of money on a car - they don't always live up to expectations, especially ones that have been used by someone else beforehand!

Other than the car having categorically been smoked in beyond reasonable prospect of the smell ever lifting, I'd give it a chance personally.

6.5k then does point to urban use, which is not really a worry.

Smelling of smoke is something you can argue is a demonstrable issue with the supplying dealer. I'd be surprised if they argue. Hopefully they can rectify it to your satisfaction.

Hi mate sorry if this brings you more worries but i had it in the past, cousin had a Audi s5 with similar virtual cockpit display but he had a mileage blocker on it & with that, his mpg always just showed 7mpg even when he was driving it normally etc.

Blimey didn;t know that was a thing even. Now even more concerned - that is what has confused me the most how it could be so low. Even daiy short runs it shouldn't be 8mpg.

My problem is - and I'm an idiot for doing it - was reseting it. I just wasn't thinking at the moment. I've got no proof now.

Presumably you bought from the trade & not privately?

If so go back to the dealer, explain your concerns.

Let them know you are extremely unhappy.

They can either ignore you, try & placate you with a free valet, or discuss rejection & finding you a new car.

None of the above may be what you want, but it’s an expensive car, they are business, they will want to retain yours or at least not get a bad reputation.

At least give them a chance to fix it.

If no joy, then a good valeter can do wonders with the smoke smell, and an independent specialist can set your mind at rest / confirm your worst fears regarding the mileage & previous useage.

What mileage is the car reporting today?

Mileage Blockers are definitely a thing and if you can identify which area this car came from it might give you a better indication if its had one fitted. I'm in the north West and the amount of RS cars that clearly have had mileage Blockers on is unreal.

There is a separate odometer for the transmission which shouldn't be more than 1% out when compared to the dash odometer. This can be read with a VCDS diagnostic tool.

There are other tell tale signs like scratches/evidence of use around the OBD port area, or parts of the dash around the instrument binnacle not fitted correctly or look like they have been disturbed etc. Yours is a 2022 so have a look at the disc and pad wear which should give you a good indication if the mileage is true or not.

The biggest giveaway is if the average speed/mpg on the trip is too low as the mileage blocker tricks the ECU which messes up the trip meter.

6500 miles in total? Here's doubting that's ever been reset.

Sounds like someone really wanted one, brought it, booted it round town and then realized they couldn't afford it a year down the line.

I mean it should be able to to take it, but if there are other things of concern and this worries you, I'd be going back/walking away if possible.

The car is on 6500 miles currently. I brought the car from a dealer in the Noth west aswell!

I'll have a look as you suggest to see if I can see anything - but it looks like these blockers are put in the engine bay. Regarding the odometer for the transmission - looking (now) at the sites that sell these things they make out that they get around this sort of thing.

Given it said 8mpg - this in my mind is just impossible to get over 6500 miles - it would be higher than that. Doing the maths thats 12 miles covered every hour. So say 2 x 30 min commutes over 6 miles.

I have spoken to the manager already at the dealership and he's asked me to put this in an email to him which I have. He has offered to pay for a valeting to try and get rid of the smoke, but I'm much more concerned about this wierd mpg value currently.

I hope it wasn't from a certain dealer in Keighley..
There's a place in Bradford that installs these Blockers, if you ever drive past there are all sorts of high value new performance cars parked outside. Mainly Audi RS, AMG & BMW M cars.

If you bought from a main dealer I would have some level of confidence that they would have been diligent enough to spot a car that's had a blocker on, but if it was an independent much less so as most don't have the ability to check for one.

It was a main dealer, but looking into these blockers they can be hard to detect if done diligently so it won't suprise me at all for them to be selling onward unbeknown to them.

I'm pretty convinced my car has had one fitted before as the mpg was 8mpg and I think its just impossible to get that over 6500 miles. I'm just gutted I reset it as I have no proof now.

The question how the f**k I can get my money back from the dealer as without something I can prove is wrong they have no reason.

The only thing I could hang my hat on is the smoking element as it wasn't disclosed in the advert or at anypoint, but I sure I'd have difficulty on that one.

So unhappy about this - ruined the car.

I thought the dealers offered a 30 day return period for whatever reason.

“My pet hamster gets travel sick in it, I need to return it. Sorry for the inconvenience and have a nice life”.

Hope that you get a helpful dealer and get the resolution you want.

.
Audi website says: "In the unlikely event of a demonstrable fault occurring within 30 days/1,000 miles (whichever occurs sooner) from the point of sale, we will offer you an exchange. This does not affect your statutory rights."

Personally, RE the smoke smell. I'd be asking the dealer for the carpets, including under the seats, and the headlining to have a wet clean, to clear the smell. I get it, my wife can smell a car smoked in, she could smell it in a 530i we looked at and I was none the wiser.

They have already offered for it to be valeted locally - I'd make sure I found someone who would give it a go correctly - ie steam headliners, carpets, use Ozone machine, etc - still no garantee it would work.

But its the least of my worries really given the mileage blocker suspected use.

If the dealer doesn't refund you just buy some GAP insurance and leave it on your drive!

I found a post on PH that if you leave a bowl of white vinegar(proper stuff) in the car for a couple of days it get rid of the smell.

Done it with my Volvo that was obviously a smokers car and it’s worked! Put a couple of air con treatments through it as well.
