Tailgate stopped working - any tips?

The electric tailgate on our 2015 Q3 has failed. We now cannot close the boot and the rear lights are not working. I think a sensor may have failed in the boot latch mechanism.

Has anyone experienced anything similar on their electric tailgate? Trying to scope the problem before taking it to my local mechanic tomorrow. I don't have a VAGCOM fault reader unfortunately.

Simplest things first, have you checked the fuses?
