Hi all

The Q5 family wagon has suffered a power steering fault.

It’s been in to Unit 20 Audi and after inspecting it they’ve advised it needs a new rack.

Unfortunately this happened just after the third party warranty it had on it from the garage I bought it from in summer 2022 had expired. I’ve since put an Audi warranty on it, which I’d intended to do but case of too late for this fault.

From what I can tell, there seems to be a few instances of the electric power steering failing on this generation of Audi generally, not just the Q5.

Seems a company called Western power steering will recondition your own part in a similar way to how the mechatronic units used to get done.

But before I either go with the new part (£2,500 plus labour) or look further into getting mine refurbed (£570), I wanted to check in here to see if anyone has had a similar experience, or can offer any guidance.

Thanks

Alex

Following on from this, I’m going to talk to Western Power Steering about their reconditioning service.

To do that, I think I’ll need a mobile mechanic to remove the rack as there’s a 10 day turnaround time to recondition my rack, and assume that not many garages will want my car sat in their premises whilst I wait for the rack to be returned.

Any recommendations for a good mobile mechanic who would cover the Wirral would be welcome.

Thanks
