Anyone had experience of both the MK7 GTI Clubsport (edition 40, not the S!) and the MK7.5 GTI TCR?

I have previously owned a CS40 myself, and loved it so much to the point I now really regret selling it!

Potentially on the look out for another one, however I have noticed that they are roughly the same price as TCR's now. (maybe a few £k's in it).

Anyone one know if the TCR is a big step up on the Clubsport 40 driving wise? I've never experienced a TCR so can't comment!

I personally prefer the looks of the CS, but would be interested to know if the TCR drives better.

Looking for a daily that can be fun on weekends and track days!

Owner of a TCR here. Never driven a clubsport but for me the TCR seems like it would be the better daily with its 7 speed DSG and creature comfort's.

No doubt the clubsport would be a better/nicer weekend car but something about the TCR being such a fantastic all rounder that does it for me.

Me and my other half recently drove down to Poitiers in France and over 1300 miles it averaged 42mpg for the whole journey. This was French tolls and the glorious English M20/M25. I feel this has a lot to do with at 125kmph the revs are only sat at 2000rpm.

Great car and one that will hold it's money long term thats for sure.

They're pretty similar cars.

If you want an automatic the TCR got a useful upgrade as Peter describes, if you want a manual the Clubsport is your only choice.

Styling tweaks to each are personal but to my eye the Clubsport is better resolved.

The compromises for OPF equipped cars are already well documented and discussed.

I would guess long term the CS40 would have better residuals, going off what Edition 30's go for.

Interested if the OP got anywhere with their decision?
Im in the same boat.
Replacing our daily mk5 gti which has been a solid car for many years. So looking to a newer golf as the perfect do it all daily.

Really want a CS 40 with buckets, especially since test driving one, but the age of car and price makes it a difficult financed purchase against newer Tcr or even R.
Can only make it work to put down 50% and i dont want it that much as intend to buy second more fun car after the winter anyway.

I know the R probably the best all rounder, The CS40 with buckets is the one i “want” and the tcr just seems like it might be a clubsport wannabe? Arguably better but just doesnt interest me as much.

Good views from all, thanks for your input and apologies about not updating.

I haven't made a decision personally yet, as I still cannot decide between both cars.

As mentioned previously, I still much prefer the CS visually, however the lack of that 7th gear does hinder it, especially when it comes to motorways etc. Buckets are lovely though, and I personally found them quiet comfortable! (take this view with a pinch of salt, as despite now being mid 20s, I still have the body of a 14 year old. If you're up to date with your modern terms, I would fall into the "short kings" category smile )

I am currently running a MK7R, which while most people will say is a better car, I much preferred the GTI CS dynamically, the R just seems so much heavier (might just be placebo effect!)

I have also had an early MK8R with all the bells and whistles (performance pack, akra exhaust, leather seats etc), which again, was a brillaint car, but just seems to lack a bit of soul!

This is why I'm intrigued to try the TCR, as I've had most of the other performance golfs, but never even sat in one of those.

On the other had, I am a billy no-mates, and never had been in a CSs either, which would be interesting. The 2 seats doesn't matter as there's never anyone else in the car with me, but think dailying a car like might be a bit too much! I also prefer the DSG in these as after all, I am part of the "playstation generation" (although I have nothing against manuals!)

There are 2 examples on AT at the moment that have taken my interest, both 5 door DSG ED40s with buckets. Ones black, the other white!

The MK7R I am currently running. Full racingline "stage 2" and set up for track with ap racing BBK.

My old MK8R I had during the crazy covid period. Owned for a year, put circa 10k miles on it and sold for a profit! driving

If the black one is at sevenoaks vw i test drove that car.
Its lovely but does need a little bit doing to be at my standard. For starters it has 3 different brand tyres on and not a matching pair in site, the splitters cracked and it desperately needs a proper detail, but it did drive very well though.

And if the white one is at bramley motors i know the previous owner and have tried to make it work to buy that car but as this is supposed to be the sensible car i cant look past 2019 golf r for noticeably less. Il wish i got a clubsport right up until i buy another track car or weekend toy and then (hopefully) it wont matter. Good luck searching.

I was in a similar situation last year. The solution I came to was separate Golf and track car. I took my Golf R on the track and just got a little bored, not wanting to thrash it. I'm now looking for a cheap(ish) Cupra r to track.

Good point on the Cupra.

OP, considered one? Cheaper, well specced, same power. I had one of the last of the line bronze-badged 290's and absolutely loved it. Might not feel as special as a TCR or Clubsport but they're definitely a dark horse and drive really well. Should be able to get a decent 300 (pick of the bunch IMO) for less than the Golf.

Cupra hadn't even crossed my mind to be honest, kind of forget they exist to be honest. Thanks for raising, could go for as a "cheaper" option

Believe it or not this car is still for sale! I’m going to look at it this afternoon.. Any more details on things you found which you didn’t like?
