Yesterday my trusty A4 Allroad was written off in a no fault accident on the A1M - a big one in which, fortunately, no one was seriously hurt though the road was closed for 2hrs, air ambulance the full works. The relatively light damage suffered by my car in comparison to the other (which to be fair did flip) caused Mrs Loto to insist on another Audi.

Anyway I need to find a replacement and am leaning to an A6 Allroad this time for the extra space for MTB duties - I have up to 18k or preferably around 16k that I'd be prepared to stump up.

Could someone with knowledge please confirm which is best to buy and what to avoid? I gather there are two types of auto box but not sure what is what and which is better. I gather some are cheaper to tax

I think they are all diesel (?) and that is my engine of choice. I intend to put a lot of miles on it.

Many thanks

A facelift BiTDI would be ideal, but whether you'll get anything worth buying for 16k I'm not sure.

Shall I fire you over a 2015 brochure so you can wrap your head around what was available?

The single turbo cars use an S-Tronic (double clutch) box that is reliable when correctly maintained, but failures are not totally unheard of. The twin-turbo cars uses a ZF 8HP that seems to be very difficult to break without doing something really stupid.

Hi Lotobear,

Glad to hear that everyone is ok after the accident!

I started an Allroad thread on here:

Allroad Owners

Much of it is photos and experiences etc but you'll find some chat about options which you'll see in Dr G's brochure.

To give you an idea, in October 2021 I paid £14,185 (privately) for my 2015 Allroad 272 with 127,000 miles on the clock. The options it had you'll see in the thread.

In June I sold the car via Motorway as it had developed a fuel leak in an outlet pipe (I think I got that right!) and bought a Kodiaq for its seven-seat flexibility.

Prices still seem strong (like everything I suppose).

As above a thread for AllRoads is up and running.

I'm on my second C7 variant. First one was the non-sport 225hp iirc, current a more loaded sport 272hp variant.
The Mpg figure when nursed changes from 50mpg to 40mpg if of interest.

However, having fitted a towbar to ours and considering the complete all-round (road) duties the car can do, it will be with us for a long time I suspect, whilst this type of car becomes obsolete.

get a towbar, rear mount bike rack for the MTB, and keep the insides clean smile

Thanks for all the helpful comments.

I'm pretty sure this will be the next car, I just need to find the right one - lot's of black ones around unfortunately which I don't like ('undertaker' look). Silver is fine and so is blue but I must have xenon lights and heated seats (my old Allroad had dreadful halogen lights that I upgraded with nightbreakers which were just about passable).

BiTurbo sounds lovley but that's more than I need so looking for the 270bhp one, or the one below (240 ish?)

So if anyone spots a decent looking candidate please do post a link!

Cheers

I was 'keen' for the BiT just 'because power' obviously, but when I looked at it closer, the size of the brakes, wheels etc I took the view that it would bring unnecessary increase in running costs tbh.

On that note. My first A6 AllRoad came with 19" wheels. The later 'Sport / 272hp' one has 20" wheels.
I'm a fan of AllSeason or Winters where we live (and hence the AllRoad)

The former ran Michelin Cross climates at £100 a corner, the latter I could only get all seasons at £250 a corner. Big difference.
and less comfy,

I should have kept the original wheels.

Your budget will also 'just' get you into a Volvo V90CC, a lovely place to spend time and even safer than the Audi.

I'm sure they're nice but I've always driven AWD estates (3x Legacys and now 2 A4 Allroads) and never been keen on the SUV look to be fair - and that's a very leggy thing for the price

Oops, soz my bad - just noticed that's the new version of the Cross Country estate - did consider these but still think it's too much for the mileage and, I think, no air suspension on the Volvo?

Fair enough on the mileage, that's why I said 'just'! No air on the CC, however ride is lovely without it, and of course, it's one less thing to go wrong.

I've had two C7s, both 272s, and fancied a BiTDI the second time but I believe the fuel economy isn't as good, and the 7-sp S-Tronic gearbox is great - I think it's the same unit fitted to Macans as PDK.

Standard kit improved over the years; heated seats weren't standard until mid-2016 though so do check they're present. The leather on the normal seats is a bit tough so it's worth finding one with sports seats because they'll have either valcona leather or alcantara. I think at least xenons were standard from launch; the basic xenons on a 2016 model were better than the optional LEDs on my later MY2018 car.

My second one came on 20"s but I switched them for a set of standard 18"s for comfort - quite a noticeable difference.

Anyway, if I were to have another it would be either a 272 or BiTDI, 2015 on (the 'facelift' on the A6 was barely noticeable on the Allroad), would need the bigger screen MMI so Carplay can be enabled, and would have the grey bumpers/arches rather than body coloured so it actually looks like an Allroad. I was never as happy with the body-coloured ones on my second. I'd also jump on any car with different interior trim to the standard textured metal because it looks so dull and dents easily on the centre console. Only ever seen one or two for sale with the A8-style optional comfort seats but I'd love one with those.

I had a 2013 with the 203hp V6.
Great car, quick enough for general dog duties.
Very capable in snow / down very muddy farm tracks.

Sold it after my dog passed as had no need for an estate any more.

Capable car and comfy too so with a bit more power I could see it being a great all rounder.

I had an RS6 previously and the All Road was just a slower version that you could be a bit more agricultural with!

I had a BiTDi Allroad and changed it because the non-sports seat were so horrible and uncomfortable. So I'd look for that first. When I spec a car now I start with the chairs and work out from there – speed matters but is not everything.

The BiTDi is very fast though and I'm glad I had that rather than the 270.

I switched my Allroad for an S6 Avant diesel this year because Audi didn’t do a fast diesel Allroad C8, and then stopped doing any Allroads at all. The ~350bhp diesel S6 engine is a nice thing. However, I would say that my 2016 pre-dieselgate Allroad 272 was quicker than the 2018 one I had afterwards. Not sure if that’s representative or if a remap might solve it, but it could be worth looking at 2015/16 models over later ones.

Think I'm sorted - went to view a car yesterday that just felt so 'right'. 2013 model with the 240 bhp engine. Euro 6 with the 272 would have been nice but hey ho.

It lacks some of the features I would have liked but it's low mileage, 54k, and has impeccable history and is truly immaculate, almost like a new car.

The 240 engine feels more than sufficient for what I require and it's on 18" wheels too which is what I wanted.

So I'm going to do the deal to day and then that's me sorted as I hate all the faff of changing a car.

Same colour as my written off A4 Allroad too so most folk won't even notice I've changed once I've had the plate transferred!

Never driven one before but what struck me is how beautifully they ride, magic carpet like and a very luxurious feel

Sounds a good one. You also avoid the Adblue which came with the update to the 272 but that may also mean it's not ULEZ compliant, so do check that if it's relevant.

I live on Hadrian's wall so Ulez is not an issue for me - I just watch it from afar and feel grateful to live where I do (Sycamore or no Sycamore) wink

Collecting the new chariot tomorrow - £186 a year fully comp with LV (on my group policy) which I thought is not half bad!

Happy days.

I’ve had a 2013 205hp model for about a year now. Ideally I wanted the 240hp version to split the difference between running costs and performance, but this one came up in really nice condition.

Even the slowest model is plenty quick for a family bus. I drive a lot in the countryside / down rough tracks, so I use the raise mode a fair bit. I also like giving it a hustle around in dynamic when the roads suit.

We’ve been all over France in it with 2 kids and all our stuff and have travelled in absolute comfort.

Nothing has gone wrong (yet) so we’ve only had routine servicing. It’s just ticked over 80k so just had the gearbox oil changed.

Hope you enjoy the car OP - it’s a great choice imo.

..identical to mine right down to colour, year and even the 18" wheels (which I wanted for max comfort and cheaper tyres). It's a 2 owner 240 car with FSH and 54k miles - this might be a good thing or a bad thing, time will tell I guess.

Just got back and it's lovely, very comfy and refined with plenty of punch - hides its speed very well.

Looking forward to the ownership experience though it's very much a daily workhorse for me - work, dogs and MTB duties

She's a little under specced - would have liked Xenon lights and heated seats but happy to swap those for condition and history - I swapped the bulbs on my last A4 Allroad for nightbreakers and it made a big difference, the std halogen lights were frankly crap.
