Self closing boot fault - VWG/Q3 issue?

The self closing boot on our 2015 Q3 makes a strange noise for 2-3 seconds every time we press the close button. Imagine a

I am guessing it could be a sensor failure, meaning the gas struts are forcing an already closed boot to shut further. It makes a kind of fast rat-a-tat noise.

Has anyone experienced something similar?

Hoping it's an easy self-fix not an expensive main dealer thing.

maybe try lubricating the latch mechanism first see if it helps.
