Morning all
Looking for advice to sway me one way or the other....
Looking at VW Polo 1.4 petrol or diesel for occasional day to day transport, and possibly trips around the Highlands over winter.
The diesel has better fuel economy, but concerned there maybe more/expensive running/maintenance issues?
Cars I'm looking at have approx 100k, will be self serviced beforehand.
Cheers

No real reason maintenance should vary but it boils down to the age of the car and the engine.

A N/A Petrol will defo not have the complexity of a diesel, but if you post the engines or age of car be easier to judge.

I have a diesel (Highlands) and other than a clutch which was a common problem with my VW - its not had a "diesel" related problem in 100k and 5 yrs.

Thanks for the response, 2004-2008 Polo, Can't find engine codes I'm afraid.

At that age, no DPF if you go diesel?
As said above though, if you find a cracking car with either engine, just buy it and get on with it.

I’ve got a 2009 1.4 TDI well known for being bulletproof and it has been. No dpf or dmf to go wrong. The car has done over 170k now and only ever needed consumables. Its still on its original clutch. It’s been in the family since 2011 so I know it’s been looked after. Even the air con still works.

I’ve got a mate with a 1.9sdi and that’s done 200k without issue.

I think they’re great cars, not special in any way but so reliable. You know you can rely on them.

My uncle has a petrol 1.2 and that’s been good up until recently where the gearbox has started whining but again it’s well on its way to 200k.
