Info on this seems to be a bit of a mish mash, so I'm hoping to find clarity here, even if it's of the 'broad brush generalisation' kind. Can my fellow PHers confirm, add to or correct the following info:

Up to 2008 (belt driven, mk5 golf etc.) is generally considered good.

2008-2012 (chain driven) has many problems: oil consumption cause by poor piston ring design, timing chains jumping, rear main seal leaks.

2013 onwards: the engine was revised to address the oil-related issues and only really suffers from a weak water pump design.

Is this a fair summing up or not?

Cheers.

Earlier engines have their own issues, including cam followers and PCVs.

My experience...

I had a 2010 scirocco 2.0 tsi,

timing chain failed at approx 35K miles requiring a new engine (thankfully mostly paid for by VW)

currently own a 2014 Tiguan with 2.0 tsi engine,

owned from new and covered just over 80K miles so far with zero issues

Having had a 2016 Golf in the household, I guess the engine remedial budget accounted for the lack of quality elsewhere. Shocking car.
