1973 beetle - carb / electronic ignition question

Hi all - bought this lovely one owner 1303 example recently. I’d like to upgrade the ignition and carb - any advice as to how to do this and which bits I need gratefully received!

oo blimey, nostalgia.

I'd be tempted to go for a new distributor rather than just a conversion kit, odds are the old one is a bit worn by now.

eg, the electronic version of https://simonbbc.com/bosch-034-svda-type-distribut...

That plus a big fat coil and some new plugs and leads will help a lot.

Carbs? dunno much there, but I would likely try new ignition first, then a carb rebuild.

You can buy reconditioning kits for the carb which is probably worth doing or buy one already reconditioned if money no object.

It's been a lot of years since I was playing with type 1s but first step used to be a decent exhaust, a pair of Kadron carbs and pertronix kit in a 009 distributor. You're then on a slippery slope towards a 2332 with IDAs!
