Golf 1.4TSI , CEL light on
Discussion
Gulp
Yesterday the car sounded a bit funny when you accelerated under load. Today CEL light on, idle choppy down on power. Local specialist can’t see it until Thursday.
A quick google says it could be a coilpack but I’d need an OBD reader to confirm.
OBD reader for VW is £225 from the link I looked at which is a bit spicy for something I’ll rarely use.
Are these Bluetooth ones that plug in and talk to your phone any good ? And can you use them on other brands , bmw or Porsche etc?
Hoping it’s not something terminal, it’s got fvwsh , 2011 , 84k . We’ve had it for 4 years and I’d struggle to replace it , probably another golf , just a bit newer.
Thanks in advance

OBD11 is the reader you want, the VW group android version is £50 on Amazon. Apple version is a bit more.
It’s easy to use, just plug it into the obd port and turn the key one turn.
Then connect it with the app and read the codes.
It can read things that other readers miss and you can also reset codes and make changes easily too.

Generic code readers abound for a lot less than £50, as do various (free / pay-for-extra) apps. You might find one like Carista is delivered via Amazon within a day.
Most of these will allow you to read and clear a code. In this case, it sounds like a hardware issue and what a code reader might allow you is some insight prior to the garage appointment.

I can't recommend Carista unfortunately for VW group cars, I know someone who bought one and it was missing a load of codes that OBD11 picked up.just for completeness ...
I didn't buy the code reader, i have a cupboard of stuff i never used again (like most blokes)
VW Specialist said fuel pump over fueling, this was replaced, then they said timing chain was stretched which will be a further £1500
I cut my losses there and sold it as spares/repairs. After getting my BMW nicked last year this is a bit of a kick in the teeth, that's life i guess .
Used car market looks a bit buxom at the moment ! prices not changed much in 3 years .
