I've read of a lot of uncertainty over the durability of the DSG gearboxes. How is the manual gearbox? And can it withstand the torque of an uprated engine?

I don't think they did a manual did they? (Maybe wrong)

Yup, pre facelift was available with a manual. It is not one of the great manual gearshifts but does the job fine.

I'd wager you'd need an uprated clutch before long but much the same box handles the torque of a 3.0 diesel with little bother.

I have manual B8 S4 (pre-face lift - 2009)
Gear box is fine, my only gripe/preference would be if it had a longer 6th gear- I think the auto's had a longer final drive. But the manual is overall a simpler system and offers less borkage potential.

Also have the manual and agree on 6th being quite short, there isn't much difference to 5th really.

Definitely less borkage vs. the auto which was my main reason for choosing it, but a clutch change can be a little pricey I believe. Mine is due one soon and am expecting a close to £2k bill.

I had one a Blue Mica (Ford colour) Avant for a while with sport diff, Supersport seats and a few more goodies. That was a lovely thing, ate both miles and B roads very nicely.

The only issue with the M6 Avants is the road tax (£615 pa at last renewal)
The saloons are in a lower band I believe
