After a lot of motorway miles (we do regular long distance into Europe and back) there appears to be some lacquer peel on the bonnet and bumper of my mk7.5 golf that I’d like to fix

I’ve had an initial quote from the local body shop for £850 inc vat.

Does that seem reasonable?

It seems hefty to me, and now I’m wondering if smart repair is an option and if that would be more cost effective

Has anyone done similar recently?

Assuming they do a half decent job I'd say that's not too bad. I was charged £430 for a bonnet spray on my Golf last year. The bumper will likely be slightly more laborious with bits of trim and parking sensors to deal with etc. Likewise I'm noticing some lacquer peel on my bumper so will be looking to get that done at some point.

Edited to add, a VW main dealer body shop quoted me £1018 for the bonnet.....

Go to a couple more body shops and see what they say first.

Sounds ok to me, will probably involve most of the front end I would guess to match the paint.

Yes, and that's very fair. £350+VAT per panel is usually a good figure as a rule of thumb.
