Hi All. My wife's audi is juddering when used a lot in stop start traffic. She commutes to oxford and the traffic is bad. She complains that the car judders when pulling away from standstill.
I have experienced similar before on various VW Audi group cars and it was always the Clutch and DMF that needed replacing at massive cost to me...

Does the diagnosis sounds correct? I have been quoted £1900 by my local garage who couldn't replicate the fault (they only drove the car 7 miles and not stop start). This seems very expensive to me.

On ECP - a LUK Flywheel is £550 and a clutch is £384 - so £934 in total. Would it be £1000 in labour for this?

I got my clutch and flywheel plus “ fork”? done for £1400 using luk parts but my A4 is 3.0 Quattro ( costs more I think than a 2.0 clutch /dmf )
Got it done at A1 clutches (they are in Birmingham/ Cannock / Tipton and Derby ) which offer I think 2 year warranty /18k miles but also you can pay in instalments interest free . I think I paid £800 up front then the remainder £200 pcm or sthg similar.
Only took a day to do too
I’d recommend asking them for a quote

I knew my clutch and dmf needed replacing as it made a noise when I engaged the clutch plus would slip in third gear. I took it to 2 mechanics who confirmed this before going to A1 clutches.

Thanks K231 - I will give them a call, but they are miles and miles from me.
I called up Swindon Audi who gave me a rough estimate of £2.5k for the work.

Stuck!!

Is this car auto or manual?

Apologies, critical information was missing. The car is a manual.

I have just been given a ball park price for the work by Swindon Audi at £2500 not including labour?

From what I've read it sounds like the car is used Swindon (or somewhere near that area) to Oxford, crawls in the Oxford traffic jams a lot and judders at low speed when in the traffic. Is that right?

Questions:
Does it judder only when the clutch pedal is engaged (like, if the car is moving slower than idle speed in first gear and you're slipping the clutch to make the car move).
Does it judder when the car is in 1st gear and just moving along on idle tickover with no accelerator pedal input at its lowest speed (will be about 5mph).
Does it judder going into all gears or just going into 1st?
Does it judder when you put the car in reverse?
Does it judder with the car rolling in neutral (coasting)?
Has the car failed to proceed at any point or is juddering the only problem?

For the record, LuK is a brand of Schaeffeler which is the OE manufacturer of clutches and flywheels for most of the big german brands, Audi included.

All the garages you speak to are going to want to do a clutch/clutch+flywheel because it's something they do all the time and isn't a small job for no money with lots of hassle. It's also the most likely thing going wrong (although stuff like engine mounts or unevenly worn brakes could also be a problem, as could "wife description of stuff").

Drive it yourself, report back.

I’d recommend trying A1 clutches for a quote
Even if they are miles away it could save you £1k.

My usual mechanics weren’t willing to take on the job themselves without considerable cost.
On my car I dropped the car in at 9 and picked it up at 4pm same day.
