My brother has offered me his 2019 Mk7.5 Golf 1.0 115 DSG in Match trim. He doesn’t care much about cars, but I helped him buy it new and it’s been maintained at VW since.

I’d normally want something a little more tasty, but given the provenance and my wife saying only the other day that she “wants a Golf” instead of our Mini, I’m likely to go for it.

I only have reservations about whether the 1.0 TSI will be sufficient. Any experiences here?

It'll be just fine, cracking little engine.

I own a Mk7.5 1.5TSi 150 DSG and have recently spent a week driving a Skoda Scala DSG with the same 1.0 115 engine that the Golf has.

It's a great engine, completely fine in a car the size of a Golf. Great performance on the motorway and around town. Good torque, so you don't have to rev it.

Pulling away from rest is slower than my 1.5 but once moving the performance is good from the smaller engine. Revs are higher on the motorway, but no problem as it's a quiet engine.

MPG wise I was getting 40-45mpg+.

Thanks for sharing the experiences, and it’s good to hear that it’s a willing powertrain. I did have a 1.2 110 TSI in a Fabia until recently, which impressed - albeit in a smaller car. The Golf is likely to suit us well, though it would occasionally be used on drives where I have appreciated my back catalogue of 300-400hp hatchbacks.

My brother is a “white goods PCPer” looking to change to a new model as the finance is ending, despite me putting the positives of buying / running the current car for much longer. I think he paid £20k for the car in 2019, on 2.9% APR - so while current trade values look good, new car deals do not!

I’ve offered to match any trade valuation he gets, and given the provenance and spec of the car this is likely to seal us both a good deal. Timeframes are uncertain though…

I have the 3 cylinder 1.0 in my golf 8. It’s just a run around but plenty enough torque for everyday driving and for motorway runs. It does the job.

Edit: DSG aswell, just easy to drive

Good to hear, thanks.

This is a DSG, too, as have all my VAG cars for a while. But I personally find the BMW dual clutch in our current Mini a step up.

To conclude this thread, I managed to persuade my brother of the financial advantages of buying the Golf himself - and, in the meantime, I've bought myself a 2016 Golf GTD. So, all's well that ends well. smile
