2017 Touareg R-Line Plus hunting between D7 and D8 at 70mph
Discussion
Folks,
Just bought a 2017 Touareg R Line Plus (last of the line old shape) and it has what VW call a "characteristic" in that is constantly hunts between D7 and D8 when cruising at 70. Very annoying and also greatly reduces the mpg too.
Pre software update cars were fine and just stayed in 8th unless appropriately provoked. Mine however just constantly switches between 7th and 8th and back again, even with sub mm throttle pedal movement.
I have done some digging.
It seems that VW updated the gearbox software in late 2017 (probably as a result of Diesel-gate) and managed to mess up the gearbox functionality in the process.
Rather than recall the affected cars and get them fixed they just refused to admit there was an issue and simply said it was a characteristic of the car!
However whilst VW never admitted that there was a problem they did write and release updated software for the transmission control unit. This was to be uploaded only if the customer pushes really hard for it. But on no account were they to admit there was a problem.
I gather the old SW had the code: 34K06G1M.MOT 130 3064 and the new version is: AL1000 AISIN 130 3546
I have sent the car back to the dealer (non VW sadly) saying that I want the revised TCU software uploaded, and I presume they will take the car to a VW dealer and ask for the fix. But I am of course expecting this to become way harder than it needs to.
It seems to be a common issue for late 2017 cars, but loads of owners have simply been met with a brick wall response from VW when asking for a fix.
Anyway, has anyone else had this issue on their Touareg and managed to get it fixed?
Any additional info would be appreciated as I set about trying to get the car sorted.
I'm based in central Scotland if that makes a difference - for instance if you happen to know of an enlightened VW dealership that will actually help that would certainly be good to know about!

I sympathise, the bodgery VAG are putting into the autoboxes completely ruins the experience. I would not hope very much that VW will come up with a satisfactory fix.
If the gearbox is the DSG type then re-mapping the TCU may improve matters. I have talked to TVS Engineering who seem knowledgeable on this, their UK Rep is Peron Automotive.
If the box is Tiptronic like mine then options are limited, TVS have a driveability update available but only 2 of their dealers in the UK have the kit to do the update.
Just checked and I believe you have the tiptronic box in that car.

I’ve got the TVS map on my T6 which has the DQ500 box, worth every penny and transforms the gearbox.
I’m assuming the Touareg will have similar improvements, my 2016 Touareg that I had from new didn’t have this issue. I should have purchased it from VW at the end of lease, but that’s another story.
