Many of those will have been subject to the “fix” for the emissions cheat, so the best one to get is any that definitely hasn’t been done.

Why?
My 2014 2.0 Skoda Superb had the fix done on the drive years ago. No noticeable change in performance. Still going great on 78k miles!

The only problem I have had is a common clutch problem, I understand. Not sure if it applies to the 1.6.
For some stupid reason, there is a clutch slave cylinder in the clutch housing. It leaked. So a complete clutch out job @ 50k miles. Had a new clutch while they was at it (£1200). Due to dumb design!
The actual engine has been faultless. Easily 60mpg on a run, £30ish annual tax.
Not ulez compliant.

I owned a 2012 Octavia vRS 2.0 CR diesel (170hp} with DSG from 2013 to 2019. Not one fault, but not that economic - just under 45mpg over 72k miles, but there were a lot of short journeys). Longer trips saw 51-53mpg.

There are alot of different engines here, we need to narrow down which car you are looking at.

The 1.6 and 2.0 diesels in a 2012 Golf for example are completely different to what is in a 2014 golf, and again is different to what is in a newer Golf.

I have that engine in my 08 A3, mine is Quattro but I agree I thought it would have been more economical than it is. It’s done 195k now and it’s cheaper to run it than swap it for a car that does a few more mpg.

I do fancy a change but I don’t know what yet.
