1.8TFSI engine c2007 - 2014. Anyone got one?
Discussion
Short lived, because think it was a bit crap. High oil consumption was common, can't recall if it was a piston ring issue or something else. Stretched timing chain problems too although think that was more from poor service intervals. Either way, best avoided really. It's an early version of the ea888 family I think. The latest gen 3 ones are meant to be better, some even have dual injectors to prevent the carbon build up associated with direct injected engines.
Gen 1 EA888 (which that is up to ~2011) can suffer issues with piston rings (poor design, a lot replaced under goodwill) and cam chain tensioner failure (not horrible to replace with later type, a lot already done).
The reason there aren't a bazillion around is that it was often a niche model.
People bought the 1.4T if they wanted a small petrol, or the diesel if they wanted motorway range. It is the forgotten middle-child.

I have a gen 3 1.8 tsi in my 2013 Leon. It’s a good engine and touch wood no problems with almost 80k on the clock. It has direct and port injection, so carbon buildup shouldn’t be a problem.
As said, best to avoid the gen 2s as the oil consumption and timing chain issues can become pricey.
