2004 A3 8P headlights

Hello all,
The wiring looms in my A3's headlights are looking a bit ropey. According to my friendly mechanic the looms are not available as a separate purchase and he's suggested buying some good second hand headlights if I can find any (which I can't).
The Audi dealer says the part is no longer available and I've been looking at various websites to see if a decent manufacturer still sells them but all I can find is some brands I've never heard of and are probably of questionable quality.
Where do you guys get good quality OEM parts from if your dealer doesn't stock them?
Also, my current headlights are xenon which are a lot more expensive than halogen. Would it be a ballache to fit halogens instead of xenons? Or would the car possibly not recognise it as it would be expecting xenon? Sorry, I'm not very technically minded!
