Golf 8: Data Transfer is currently set to Maximum Privacy -?

Can anyone please point me at a solution for this ... I've lost all the information on the central screen, i.e. mpg, date of next service etc, but the screen itself is still working for the driver-assist systems:

By the right of the screen there is world icon and a little man icon. Press the little man icon and all your privacy settings should come up. You can chose how much data to share. This will only work if the world icon is illuminated which means you have a data signal.

Just had a look and the world icon isn't illuminated. The little man doesn't work (now I know it's supposed to be a little man!! I thought it was some weird Chinese or Japanese character).
Data signal? Not sure what that means - is the car trying to communicate with itself or the outside world?
So, still no data, still stuck on that message.

Took it to the VW dealer today. A big glass and chrome/neon type place.

Switched on the ignition, to demo to the engineer, he touched the screen and it started working! He wouldn't/couldn't tell me what he did, but whenever I'd tried it before that it would do nothing.

I'm starting to suspect it's a trick to make you go to the dealer, and there's a secret mobile signal it picks up when you get there, to re-enable it.

In years to come this will become known as VW's "DataGate".
