End of the VW Golf
Discussion
Sad if true, had loads of Golfs over the years and loved them all, running a MK7 R at the moment. I haven't seen any articles or anything on it though. I imagine that they're doing so to focus on electric production, just like how Ford killed off the Fiesta. I hope Porsche doesn't follow this trend of killing of iconic car models...

I am probably mistaken but I already had that as known in my mind given the ID3. I thought I had heard this some time back but maybe it was future wisdom from PH
I thought they would discontinue the ID3 name and transfer the Golf name over to the new ID3 generations when pretty much all cars where going to be BEV's?LJF_97 said:

They might. They don't have decide yet.Meanwhile it's got everyone talking about Golfs and other VW cars, so it worked

What makes it a 'Golf'?
If it's simply the name of a mid-sized hatch (estate too) from VW...then the ID3 could easily have been called the 'New Golf'...if VW were really bothered about keeping the name alive.
Maybe this is pure marketing to get the nostalgia flowing, and then they'll announce a (new) fully-electric Golf based on the ID3?

End of an era - but ford dropped the escort name how long ago? they both came out at the same time ish, maybe it's the right thing to do.
Don't worry, Ford will be back with yet another another fking SUV that they'll call the Escort soon enough. mmm-five said:

the current golf has very little in common with the original, its not far off fitting the original in a golf estate's boot lol If it's simply the name of a mid-sized hatch (estate too) from VW...then the ID3 could easily have been called the 'New Golf'...if VW were really bothered about keeping the name alive.

There's been some suggestion in the motoring press that the ID2 (due 2025) could carry the Golf name. If it's simply the name of a mid-sized hatch (estate too) from VW...then the ID3 could easily have been called the 'New Golf'...if VW were really bothered about keeping the name alive.

My first car was a Golf, a well used Mk1.
Currently I have a Mk7.5, there's a good chance my next car will be an EV - I chose the 7.5 as I don't like the 8.
The dealer where I bought my car said many people had also stopped regularly buying Golfs from them when the 8 came out sadly.
If they decide to use the Polo name for the id.2 then there is a chance the Golf name could be used for another EV.
The id.2 looks to me to be a good successor to my Golf.

I'd guess that the ID2.all concept is intended to be an EV polo its the same length and width, scheduled for production in Navarra (spain) where some of the current polo production is.
IMHO the second generation ID3 will be the Golf replacement. The current ID3 having just had the facelift refresh revealed so 2026/7 would fit with a new replacement and around the time the mk8 is due to stop production. The timings are so coincidental you'd think VW might have even planned this from the outset.

The thing I like about the id.2 is that the interior space is supposed to be golf sized, but the exterior polo sized.
I've spent a few days in the id.3 now as my dealer used to have one as a service loan car, but much prefer the looks of the 2 over the 3 as it's more traditional.
Price is a big thing, with a 3 getting on for £40k it puts it way above standard golf money.
It's a shame they are getting rid of the golf, something like the e golf but with double the range could have done well if priced reasonably.
My 2020 Mk7.5 Golf is what I consider peak Golf for me, the safety tech you need with nothing you don't. Controls and displays easy to use on the move without looking.
The Mk8 was too much of a shift for long term Golf owners, who moved away.

I doubt it's as clear cut as that, it's possible they want to completely rebrand when they become an EV only co. (and that's probably in some doubt now) but there's a lot of value in the Golf brand.
VW won't want to continue to produce an entire lineup of Petrol and a seperate line of EVs so they'll be merged, I guess they'll wait to see how the wind blows, they might call their family hatch ID3 or Golf. but in any case, I doubt both names will carry on.
VW have all but stopped developing new ICE cars anyway, the MK8 is not overly foundly compared to the MK7.5, mechanically very simluar, changes limited to makign it cheaper to produce, the engines are largely the same and the tech is, shiny and new, but again, designed to be made cheaper with less switchgear.
The Passat is all but dead, the existing one has been around for 9 years, it's being replaced by the ID.7 this year.
