somebody mentioned to me the other day that VW made a few W8 (8cyl) passats and some estates. I know nothing about these cars - thoughts? I wondered how it compared to the hotted up Audis - you know the S4s etc. I'd guess a little cheaper to buy....

There was a piece in this week's Autocar about them. Very few made, used prices around the same as a V6 4Motion 'plus a bit'. No entry in Glass's. Around £15k should get one, if you can find one! 265BHP IIRC?
I found myself considering one of these as a replacement for my urS4 (better space in the back for dog-crate). Couldn't find even one. Subsequently found that dogs will fit in top-box so problem solved.

I test drove a W8 and wasn't that impressed - as I said to the VW sales guy, who is going to buy a 30K Passat that doesn't even have electric seats? It was fairly rapid, but deceptively so - that old quiet engine / are we really going that fast thing.
If you like the Passat and can pick one up for V6 money, it's probably good value.
