Q5 Hybrid - a turkey which voted for Xmas
Discussion
After 2000 miles in a Q5 ‘50’, which was a replacement for the family bus after a biffa truck decided to remodel for us I thought I’d share the horror of the recent drive.
Electric range, naff all. Figure on 12 miles after charging all night. General fuel consumption was tragic. A 2L petrol which barely averaged 27mpg, the same trip in the GLC returned 46mpg, how is this the future? Brakes, ste , regen brakes…this depends on your distance from the car ahead. Weirdly the cruise isn’t adaptive. The throttle pedal has this curious feature which makes it vibrate, a little like abs triggering, which seems to happen if the car decides you are travelling too fast? The GUI is awful, typical of all modern Audis you get spurious messages about limited visibility, despite you having the windscreen wipers on and playing ‘singing in the rain’ on CarPlay. The hybrid motor seems to fill in the low end shove, which makes the car quite urgent around the McDonalds car park.
I thought it was total crap to be honest and a 5 year old diesel GLC is the better car for ‘everything’ apart from being an Audi. I’ve never liked modern cars, but this is just not trying. No wonder nobody gives a st about driving if this is the best we can do? An E90 V8 M3 managed a similar mpg fully loaded a few years back. I’m genuinely confused how this car sells, apart from being a tax break maybe?
Anyway. Avoid. Take the bus. Audi, you should be ashamed of the durge you have created.

It’s just a tax break.
PHEV’s make little sense as new cars in 2023 unless they have more than 50 miles of range. 10 is unacceptable.
EV’s which can do more than 250 realistic miles on a charge and can get 80% of charge from a rapid charger in less than 15-30 minutes. That’s the future, and it already exists.
Coming from a PHEV driver. My car manages between 20 and 28 miles on a charge, which is OK for me .

Still not good enough IMO. I'm not a high mileage driver but do need to be able to make 200+ mile journey and back again in a day sometimes and I can't be doing with spending 1hr+ out of the day waiting for a charge (plus however long waiting for a charger) when currently, even with a 25mpg car I only need one 5-minute fill-up.Plus, I hear all this about only charging to 80% due to speed/efficiency etc. but surely that just means your 250 mile vehicle is, for the most part, at best a 200 mile vehicle?

Why would you need to wait 1 hr for a charge? You would only have to wait 15 mins for it to charge up to 200 miles. You probably wouldn’t even have to wait 15 mins if you didn’t need that full 200 miles.Plus, I hear all this about only charging to 80% due to speed/efficiency etc. but surely that just means your 250 mile vehicle is, for the most part, at best a 200 mile vehicle?
You rarely need to wait for chargers. It’s pretty much a myth. Having lived with an EV (Renault Zoe) and currently owning a car which both runs on electric and petrol, I know that its pretty much a myth. I took the Zoe from London to the Gower peninsula in Wales, and I didn’t encounter any of these mythical charging wait times once on my travels, nor did I have any problems in London or Hertfordshire.
I can tell you however that I still have wasted many hours queuing in the war zones of Costco, Tesco and Asda petrol stations which probably took longer than a rapid charge of the Zoe.
There are cars that suit your very niche travel distance.
All WLTP
Mercedes EQS - 453 miles
Tesla Model S - 405 miles
Mercedes EQE - 393 miles
BMW i7 - 388 miles
BMW iX - 380 miles
And if these cars are out of you and I’s price bracket, here are some more affordable by the common man - and similar priced to many ICE’s
Hyundai Ioniq 6 - 379 miles
Tesla Model 3 - 360 miles
BMW i4 - 353 miles
Volkswagen ID.3 Tour - 340 miles
Polestar 2 - 335 miles
Kia EV6 - 328 miles
Take 15% off these ranges for a realistic range
Not to mention these cars are all much cheaper to run than any ICE with an off peak charging tariff
So you’re misinformed

Well you said 15-30 minutes so I took the worse case scenario of 30 minutes and if I'm going 200+ miles then 200+ miles return I might need 2 charges? especially if I only charge to 80% and/or if it's winter time where the range is reduced.Plus, I'm not convinced that (for now at least) there'll always be a charger free when I need one hence the waiting time.

Maybe but I need a bit more margin of range/charge time before I'm convinced, that said we have discussed/considered an EV for the Mrs. as although she does more miles than me, she uses her car every day but rarely more than 50 miles per day so a home-charged EV would suit her quite well but, for now at least the price for anything decent is prohibitive. I'll hang on to my ICE cars for now...

For your first point about charging stations, like a lot of things these days there’s an app for that that lets you see what’s available:
One of which is the PodPoint app
You can also get your journey and stops planned for you by in car nav or these apps
