I've had my 2010 Passat B6 2.0 Tdi for about 5 years and it's now on just north of 175k miles, so it doesn't owe me anything and I'm hoping who knows their war around these engines can give me some more practical help that doesn't involve a repair that's more than the car is worrth?

It's always buffed blue smoke a bit when you accelerate after overrun, if you take it for a longer run it's clear for a while but after a week or so of shorter journeys it start to do it again. I'm not sure if this has really got any worse.

I've had the EGR valve fail three times in the 40k miles I've done in the car, the previous one lasted about 25k miles, the last one about 5k, putting in in to limp mode until you restart the car or cancel the error code. I've run VCDS and it comes up with P0403 EGR malfunction, there's also P2461A which relates to coolant pump 2 and I don't think is related.

My question is. Do I have a failing turbo pumping oil into the intercooler/EGR valve where it's baking on and giving an EGR code? Or am I just having multiple EGR failures?

Some pics of the EGR I removed after 25k miles.

Looks normal to me, are you buying oem egr valves or eBay specials?

I've been buying cheapies because the OEM ones are almost as much as the car is worth and the EGR is easy enough to change.

I get you but in my experience they are complete junk.

We will only fit genuine or decent brand such as Valero, pierburg etc. everything else is rubbish and doesn’t last

I get that but I’m running it on a shoestring, even the cheapies come with a 5 year guarantee, I call them, they just send another one, I fit it myself in about 45 minutes, job done, costs me nothing.
At least nobody thinks I need to change the turbo, so problem solved!

In fairness the Turbo if original is probably on its last legs but I don’t think it’s contributing to the Egr failures.
