Diesel S4 Avant vs petrol S4 Avant
Discussion
Hi All,
In the market for an S4 Avant and currently looking at 2019/2020 models. It's the crossover between the previous 3.0 TFSI petrol model and the 3.0 TDI model. Seen a few You Tube vids on the comparison between the two but looking for thoughts/opinions on the pros/cons of both.
Better to get a late model petrol or move to the diesel for current spec/gadgets etc but live with the oil burner. Naturally there's better fuel consumption with the TDI but worth sacrificing instant performance of the petrol.
Thoughts?

Cannot be of much help as I do not have any experience with either model. However, I would equally be concerned as to how the government of the day and others are going to treat diesel cars in the run up to the electric deadline, currently, diesel prices at the pumps are horrendous compared to petrol. In the market for an S4 Avant and currently looking at 2019/2020 models. Best of luck with your chosen vehicle, others will be along to put you on the right path.
Only you can answer the question as it depends on your attitude to diesel. I sold my last diesel car over three years ago and will not have one again but lots of people are happy with them. I’ve had four S4s over 25+ years and was disappointed when they moved away from petrol but as a sub brand it has gradually been disappearing. Shame.
I sell lots of the petrol ones. They are good.
The diesel is fine, if lacking sparkle. It feels more like a more powerful diesel A4 than it does an 'S' car to me.
Bet you the petrols end up worth more despite being older.
What tech/gadget in the new model is it you want? It's an updated version of the same thing rather than anything brand new.

The better fuel economy will be somewhat negated by higher pump prices for diesel. Personally, I would stick with petrol. I couldn't go back to diesel now as I spent so much time and fuel on dpf regens, lots of oil changes to combat oil dilution and sitting at lights with the diesel idling chug... Since going petrol I've hardly had to think about the car and can just enjoy it
I can sort of answer this as I drive an SQ5 tfsi so has the same petrol engine as the S4 petrol.
The petrol engine can be economical, can often see 23-26mpg in town and 36mpg on a motorway run, so a lighter S4 should return slightly better numbers than my SQ5?
The 8 speed zf box is great as it has good shifting and plus with a petrol unit you’ve got no issues regarding dpf’s, injectors etc.
Servicing outside of the main dealer network is cheaper, although Audi now do a service plan covering S cars under 4000cc which can undercut an independent, depends on where in the country you are?
In short you won’t go wrong with a petrol S4.
