Seriously looking at one of these in late B7 / early B8 A4 flavour. My 5 series is a great car but I'm missing the practicality of load-through space - no folding seats - and the N53ness is getting a bit too much.

My comparison is the Mk1 TT I had for 6 years a fair while back now. It was pretty reliable, drove well in a FWD sort of way, was plenty quick enough with a St1 remap and returned 37 mpg on long drives. That's basically what I want now, but with 4 seats and a boot.

How is this engine to live with?
Does the emissions gubbins st itself with the same regularity as the N53?
What is parts availability like?
Does it have piezo injectors to run the stratified charge, is the design better than Munich's?
How much of a problem/risk is the piston rings issue long term, and how to tell engine variants apart visually if there are ones to avoid?
Is there a clear preference B7/B8 - strong drivers towards or away from one or the other?

I'm looking to get the power up to the same 260ish bhp the TT was at, so it'll be remapped. I'm surprised the power figure is only 211bhp from the 2.0T. anything to watch for here over the usual?

How is the DTM tuned engine ? On paper the extra 10 bhp doesn't look remotely worth the economy hit, but on the road may be a different story.

Thanks, I will update with any outcomes.

Same engine as the mk5 Golf GTI, and it's great. Nothing ever goes wrong, and the things that do (PCV valve, diverter valve and some other stuff I can't recall) are all about £30 to DIY and can often transform the car.

We're dicussing two completely different engines here.

A B7 is an EA113 series 2.0TFSI, and is generally sturdy with some more minor issues. Timing belt on these.

An early B8 is a gen 1 EA888 and will st its piston rings, and occasionally chain tensioner too. If you are looking at an early B8 it's worth finding one with the corrective work already carried out, as left unchecked over time it will destroy the engine.

Thanks, great info. I'd done some background on it but got a bit confused. Are they visually distinct?

If you're looking at A4s one is in the B7 and the other in the B8. Never the two shall meet.

Well, I have just bought an A4 DTM Edition. I will update when I get the incumbent sold and have a chance to go over it with a fine toothed comb

Good choice! A model I've always had a soft spot for.

It's a proper car. 3 pedals, gears, handbrake, steering wheel, HVAC system and some ICE. It's all you need.
Hopefully it is reliable and reasonably frugal. It did a solid 32 MPG on the run back so probably looking at 30ish on a brim to brim run.
Needs a thermostat, Haldex service and cam follower and possible an A/C regas, but otherwise seems very well sorted.

Unless someone has left an S3's rear axle in the boot it doesn't have Haldex...

Lol.

I love all these "Just needs a..... " when it comes to buying and selling cars. The cam follower is a critical part, but only costs 50 quid and 20 mins to fit, and yet..... similarly the thermostat. 30mpg is ste. They're capable of 38-40 easily on a gentle run. Get the thermostat replaced already!

Here's the car for anyone interested, I'm a bit pleased with it and over-shared.

Thought there could be issues with the chain tensioner at the back of the head, and also the balancer shaft chain tensioner?
